Pacusan Dreamboat made a couple of significant flights. In December 1945 it broke the transcontinental speed record from Burbank to New York. In October 1946 it flew non-stop from Hawaii to Cairo over the North Pole. This photo may show the crew being honoured in Washington on their return from Cairo but this is not definite. On 4 May 1917, six USN destroyers arrived in Cork, then in the UK, to help fight the German U-boat menace. By October 1918 at least 9000 Americans were based in the area and a seaplane station had been built at Aghada. Operations began on 30 September 1918 and 64 sorties were flown until the 11 November armistice, when there were some 28 seaplanes at Aghada. Photo from: National Museum of the US Navy

The first Kaman helicopter, first flown on 15 January 1947. The K-125 was modified several times and here it has a single tailfin, presumably designated K-125A. The pilot is Charles Kaman and the passenger probably his wife Helen, who was both an aeronautical engineer and an artist. Photo by: Bernard Hoffman / Life

The Gallaudet D-1 was a complex machine - not only the propeller was mounted amidships, but also two Duesenberg engines side by side. It was first assigned early USN serial AH-61, later 59A. It did well enough apparently to be assigned to seaplane launching trials conducted by the cruiser Huntington in 1917. It was followed by the D-2, with the observer seated in front of the pilot, and the D-4 with a single Liberty engine. Photo from: National Museum of the US Navy
