Enjoying a rare open-air appearance while its static display accommodation, the American Air Museum at IWM Duxford, was undergoing refurbishment. Taken on strength by the USAAF in May 1945, but stored at Davis-Monthan AFB, AZ. Re-activated for the Korean War and issued in 1951 to 371st BS at Kadena AB, Okinawa. Flew 105 missions over Korea. By 1956 in use as a ground target for weapons testing at China Lake, CA. Donated to the UK's Imperial War Museum in 1979. Restored to airworthy condition for ferrying to Duxford as G-BHDK in 1980.

Delivered to the USAAF with s/n 45-21787, it was one of four B-29s transferred to the US Navy for long range search operations with the designation P2B-1S. BuNo 84029 was loaned to NACA where it was converted to a mothership to launch the D-558-II Skyrocket. Test pilot Scott Crossfield was the first to exceed Mach 2 on 20 Nov 1953 after release of the Skyrocket from the P2B. His signature with "MACH 2" below it can be seen next to the nose art. D-558-II NACA 144 and NACA 145 launches are represented on the panels.

Posing as 'Joltin Josie, The Pacific Pioneer' of the 873rd Bomb Sqn, 498th Bomb Group (T) with accompanying port side nose art and mission marks - that I unfortunately do not have a decent photo of. Tragically, 42-24614 caught fire and crashed on take-off in the Northern Marianas on 1 April 1945, killing everyone on board. This airframe's true ID is in tiny print under the stabilo: RB/WB-29A 44-62220. Delivered to the USAAF in September 1945 and after active weather recce duty to the US Army as a static training target, 1960-1985, then to the USAF Museum in 1998.

This B-29 was recovered from the Aberdeen Proving Ground by the Bradley Air Museum in 1973 and although damaged in the 1979 tornado, was restored between 1998 and 2003 (using the rear fuselage of 44-61739). Although the aircraft was too late to see war service, it was painted to represent 46-1566 (without serial) which had flown with the 468th BG/58th BW from Tinian.

WW353, which was allocated the serial A76-1 (never applied), did most of the flying while WW354 (A76-2) was held in reserve. Both were scrapped, WW353 at Tocumwal, NSW, in 1962. It had been sold in 1956 for scrap by the RAF, which had taken back the aircraft. A private attempt in 1957 to sell it as a flyable aircraft came to nought.
