The S.61 fighter was not selected by the French air force but large numbers were built for Romania and especially Poland. The S.61/6 was a racer and this second airframe was built for a world speed record attempt. It seems that it had an accident by March 1928 and was then rebuilt as the S.61/9, F-AJCR. Bellancas made amazing long-distance flights. Cape Cod flew 8066 km (5012 miles) non-stop from New York to Istanbul in July 1931, piloted by Russell Boardman and John Polando. Photo dated September 1930 by the source but the aircraft, then wearing 'The 1930 American Legion Convention' titles, was severely damaged by fire on 4 September 1930. Repairs cost of $25,000. In the early 1920s American commercial aviation was begging to be regulated by the government! One of the problems of the lack of supervision was that it was difficult to get aircraft insured. The N letter register was set up not by the government but by Underwriters' Laboratories. Less than 50 aircraft were entered in this voluntary register, however. N-ABCC was one of the first. UL suggest the photo was taken in November 1921 when John Yonge, on the right, became the ninth pilot registered by UL. Photo from: UL Solutions

Airframe was approved for an uprated, 450-hp P&W Wasp engine. Listed as delivered to Transportes Aereos de Chiapas - TACSA in Mexico. Photo from collection of Lammot du Pont, a member of the wealthy Du Pont family who invested in Bellanca. The likely location would be Bellanca Airfield in Delaware, but the background doesn't seem to match. Photo from: Hagley Museum and Library
