Airframe was approved for an uprated, 450-hp P&W Wasp engine. Listed as delivered to Transportes Aereos de Chiapas - TACSA in Mexico. Photo from collection of Lammot du Pont, a member of the wealthy Du Pont family who invested in Bellanca. The likely location would be Bellanca Airfield in Delaware, but the background doesn't seem to match. Photo from: Hagley Museum and Library

Having flown across the Pacific, the Bellanca Miss Veedol was sold and renamed The American Nurse for a transatlantic flight to Rome captained by the Italian-born Dr Pisculli, founder of the American Nurses' Aviation Service. The pilot was William Ulbrich and the co-pilot Edna Newcomer, who was also a nurse and a dancer. Pisculli intended to study the health of the pilots and of his groundhog Tailwind during the flight. They took off from Floyd Bennett Field on 13 September 1932 but disappeared over the Atlantic and were never found. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution

Clyde Pangborn and Hugh Herndon aborted a fast flight around the world and instead managed to make the first non-stop flight across the Pacific, from Japan. Arriving over the American coast, they even decided to continue to Boise, Idaho, but the weather would not cooperate and they belly-landed at Fancher Field, Washington state, having jettisoned Miss Veedol's landing gear after take-off. Veedol is a motor oil brand. The CH-400 Special Model J seems to be the same model as the Bellanca J-300. Photo from: The Oregon Journal / Oregon Historical Society

This is a replica of the Bellanca CH-400 Special Model J in which Clyde Pangborn and Hugh Herndon, Jr. made the world's first nonstop flight across the Pacific Ocean from Misawa, Japan to Wenatchee, Washington on Oct 4, 1931. In 1998 the Spirit of Wenatchee organization was formed to build a flying replica for 100 Years of Powered Flight celebrations in 2003. Much of the work was done by members of EAA Chapter 424 based in Wenatchee. In 2005, a crew flew the Bellancato Eastern Canada and stopped at the Toronto Aerospace Museum located in an old DHC factory at Downsview Airport, Toronto, ON. Photographer: Charles Kadin.

Swedish pilot Kurt Björkvall tried to fly this Bellanca across the Atlantic in October 1936 but he had to ditch 100 km short off the Irish coast. He was rescued by the French trawler Imbrim. Originally a CH-300W, the aircraft had supposedly been upgraded to CH-400W standard but was still called a Pacemaker, not a Skyrocket. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution

Naval officers posing in front of a Bellanca at the old Point Barrow airfield, which was improved with pierced steel planking and a hangar in 1945. The Bellanca D was developed from the CH-400. This airframe was with Wien Alaska Airlines by 1946 and the livery looks like Wien's, but what do the titles read? Photo from: Naval History and Heritage Command

Built in 1928 as a CH-300, then restored and fitted with 420 h.p. P&W Wasp engine to CH-400 standard. Painted to represent the prewar record breaking Bellanca WB-2 NX237 with the "New York - Berlin" titles and number 140 it carried during its failed transatlantic flight on 4-6 June 1927. It never reached Berlin but landed at Eisleben, Germany instead. The smaller titles on the rear fuselage read "Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce", which organised this transatlantic challenge.
