VH-AXL was fitted with two small porthole windows either side of the cabin when delivered to QEA. It had been an ambulance aircraft with the RAAF and was sold to the Flying Doctor Service. AXL was operated by Connellan Airways with these portholes but it is not known if they were installed by the RAAF or by Connellan postwar. Qantas refitted the standard DH84 glasshouse and sent the aircraft to Papua New Guinea. It crashed there at Karanka on September 21, 1951. Note the Qantas hangar still has its wartime camouflage. While operating a scheduled airline service from Wau to Bulolo and Lae, VH-EBQ crashed in Huon Gulf, 4 miles south of Lae Aerodrome while attempting to land at Lae in low cloud and rain. Originally thought to be due to VFR flight into bad weather, the centre propeller (seen here) was subsequently found to have shed a blade in flight and torn the engine out of its mounts, causing the pilot to lose control.

Used to connect Australia with Sri Lanka during World War II. Known as the Double Sunrise service as the sun rose twice during the non-stop flights that lasted up to 32 hours. G-AGID scuttled near Rottnest Island on January 30, 1946. When explosives failed to sink it, gun fire was used. G-AGID had flown to its final resting place because a bridge prevented it being towed there. That meant making it airworthy again for its final flight. The Catalinas has been retired when Liberators took over the route. Photo from: Hudson Fysh Collection/ State Library of New South Wales
