Green River is a tiny town near the border with the Indonesia's Papuan provinces. In the 1960s it was seen as a potential flash point between Indonesia and Australia, which had control over Papua New Guinea. Australia, along with the UK and New Zealand, were involved in an undeclared war with Indonesia over its opposition to the creation of Malaysia. The airport at Green River was built at this time with a runway long enough for C-130 operations. At the time of upload, it has no scheduled air services. Doug Leaver photo.

G-AUHI was on the register from May 1928 until its crash at Golden Grove, South Australia on September 4 that year. Based In Queensland, it had been flown to Adelaide via Darwin by C.W.A. Scott, who later flew DH88 Comet G-ACSS Grovenor House to win the 1934 MacRobertson Trophy Air Race. The passenger was RAF Air Marshall Sir John Salmond. G-AUHI crashed in bad weather when leaving Adelaide. Scott was seriously injured and his engineer later died from his injuries. Salmond was not onboard having completed his travels on the DH50 at Adelaide two days earlier.

Aircraft gathered at Vanimo in the search for missing Cessna 206 VH-ATG, operated by Aerial Tours. The Ansett-MAL DC-3 brought in drums of extra fuel for the search aircraft. The F27 was on one of its regular twice weekly services that overnighted at Vanimo. Despite a 12-day search, VH-ATG was not found. The wreckage was eventually spotted in January 1971.
