Aptly nicknamed Knuckleduster, the all-metal Short S.18 or R.24/31 unsuccessfully competed with the conventional Saro London and Supermarine Stranraer biplane flying boats, and only this prototype was built. It suffered from unreliable Goshawk steam-cooled engines but was a step towards the Short Empire and Sunderland. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

When the US Air Force visited Avro Canada in 1953 to look at the all weather CF-100 fighter, a "special projects group" showed them plans for a circular disk-shaped aircraft known as Project Y-2. The USAF agreed to fund the project that resulted in two Avrocar test vehicles. Control problems with the aircraft out of ground effect couldn't be overcome and the project was cancelled in 1961. Pictured is the first Avrocar (58-7055 ) that went to the Air Force. The second (59-4975) is in the collection of the US Army Aviation Museum.

The Ki-15 reconnaissance aircraft had excellent performance for its engine power and this prototype, sponsored by the Asahi Shimbun newspaper, flew from Tokyo to London in April 1937 in only 51 flight hours and 94 hours elapsed time. It was named Kamikaze which means 'divine wind'. The type was referred to as Karigane but the status of this is not clear. 'Mitsubishi', with the well-known company logo, is painted at the base of the rudder. This litte-known photo is assumed taken during the aircraft's stay in England. With the Polish team neatly lined up, the photo was probably taken in Berlin where the 1930 edition of the Challenge International de Tourisme was organised. The contenders assembled at Staaken but this is likely the apron of Tempelhof. Many contenders dropped out during the event's 7560-km rally through Europe, including SP-ADK / O9 and SP-ADL / P1. Jerzy Bajan and mechanic Gustaw Pokrzywka in SP-ADM came 32nd in the final qualification of the Challenge. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

The Focke-Wulf Fw 61 is often considered the first practical, functional helicopter and was first flown in 1936. Only two aircraft were produced with the first prototype, D-EBVU, making its first free flight in June 1936 and by early 1937, the second prototype, D-EKRA, had also flown. Neither of these machines appear to have survived WWII, although this replica is on display at this super museum.

Six-passenger transport. This is the second 111 airframe, built as the 111/2 and later re-engined. 'The 111/3 was flown as part of the Patrouille Bleriot which gave exhibitions and demonstrations around France and Spain in the 1930s.' The first aircraft (c/n 01) was modified twice to become the 111/4, the first French aircraft with a retractable landing gear, and the 111/5 Sagittaire. The 111/6 (c/n 1) was a no-show in the 1934 London-Melbourne race. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)
