Aptly nicknamed Knuckleduster, the all-metal Short S.18 or R.24/31 unsuccessfully competed with the conventional Saro London and Supermarine Stranraer biplane flying boats, and only this prototype was built. It suffered from unreliable Goshawk steam-cooled engines but was a step towards the Short Empire and Sunderland.
