Official photo taken during testing at Martlesham Heath shows E.20A in its final form. The wing and undercarriage was from the modified 1934 aircraft but the fuselage was completely new. The single pair of exhaust stubs suggests that the engine is the 180 hp Regnier 8L installed to allow Guy de Chateaubrun to compete in the Coupe Armand-Esders race held on 20 July 1935 over 1,046 miles from Deauville to Cannes and return. It won at an average speed of 188 mph.

Prototype Hendy Heck, designed by Basil Henderson to a specification written by Whitney Straight. C of A tests at Martlesham delayed as a result of damage incurred during a forced landing en route from Yeovil - in the course of which it collided with a cow! Flown by David Llewellyn and Jill Wyndham for Cape Record attempt Oct-Nov 1935 but dogged with issues including problems with the retractable undercarriage. Production version became the Parnall Heck 2C with fixed undercarriage. Scrapped 1937.

The first flight is noted as having taken place at Woodley on 12 October 1934 and H L Brook left Mildenhall for Melbourne on 20 October 1934. This photo shows the original E.1 Mew Gull racer, but after it was fitted with a new tapered wing, redesigned undercarriage, different engine and weighted rudder balance. The date is probably June 1934 as it is not yet fully painted. It raced in the King's Cup in July. Later, the new wing and undercarriage were mated to a new fuselage, producing the E.2, c/n E.20A, still G-ACND. Thanks to Gordon Riley for his information.

Blackburn was contracted to build two transports, one a biplane and one a monoplane, that would be otherwise identical. It was to test the relative merits of the configurations. The monoplane proved superior and G-ABKW was scrapped. It did provide spares for the monoplane, G-ABKV, which was sent to the Royal Aircraft Establishment for use in trials and experiments. The Air Ministry ordered two CA.15C from Blackburn. One was a monoplane and the other a biplane (G-ABKW). Other than the wings, the aircraft were identical with the objective of assessing the advantages of one configuration over the other. The monoplane was shown to be superior and the biplane was scrapped. G-ABKV was taken on charge by the RAF as K4241 and joined the Royal Aircraft Establishment fleet at Farnborough. It was used in the development of autopilots and fir radio experiments. Withdrawn in 1936. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

Fairey P.4/34 was developed as light bomber but lost out the Hawker Henley. However by the time it was ready to enter service the RAF's needs had changes and it became a target tug instead. Meanwhile Fairey use K7555 as the basisof a carrier fighter that became the Fulmar. K7555 was later reinforced and deliberately flown into the weighted cables hung beneath barrage balloons. It apparently survived 300 such encounters. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

The prototype Sopwith Dragon which was converted from the 6th Sopwith Snipe prototype. The changes were an ABC Dragonfly radial instead of a rotary and a longer fuselage to compensate for the heavier engine. An RAF order for 300 Snipes was converted to Dragons. But ongoing problems with the ABC engines resulted in 200 engineless airframes in storage. A small number were delivered to the RAF they were never issued to a squadron. G-ADYH was sent to Martlesham Heath following an accident involving a British Airways DH-86. A spate of earlier accidents involving Australian DH-86s had led to strong denials from DH and the British Government that the aircraft was defective. G-ADYH never received an RAF serial during its short stay. Found its way to Australia after World War II but was refused a certificate of airworthiness. Ended its days in Indonesia in 1949. Designed by Dutch engineer Frederick Koolhoven, the F.K.25 was developed to replace the Sopwith Snipe. This is the second prototype, the first having been lost during an attempt to set a new world altitude record. The F.K.25 was powered by the ABC Dragonfly engine, which was hopelessly unreliable. The project was abandoned when Koolhoven left the British Aerial Transport Company at the end of 1919. Photo from: Imperial War Museums
