Six years later on November 4, 1988, the helicopter was departing an offshore production platform in the Gulf of Mexico when the tail rotor drive shaft failed and it crashed after losing tail rotor function. This 1963 Orion was stationed at Moffett Field in the 1980s. It was placed on display near Hangar One in 1996. The aircraft is in good shape for being outside for twenty-five years, but that warm California sun has faded some of the markings on this side.
