VH-UTZ did not last long with Australian Transcontinental Airways and was written off on September 6, 1935 during a forced landing at Alawalla Ridge, north of Alice Springs. The photo may have been taken as few days earlier, the 3rd, when it force landed at Kelly's Well due to low fuel. The vehicle says "Pioneer Tours Darwin Luggage Van" but is not Darwin aerodrome. In the Kelly's Well incident, a drum of fuel was brought to stranded aircraft and passengers went on by road.

Photos of VH-TVC in Ansett-ANA markings are hard to find. Ansett-ANA received three of TAA's Viscount 720s in a lease exchange for two of its DC-6Bs. The exchange was forced on TAA by the government in an attempt to equalise the two fleets. TVC broke up over Sydney's Botany Bay on November 30, 1961 after flying into a storm soon after take-off.

This was not the first time the Southern Cross had flown to New Zealand. The first time was 1928. Charles Kingsford Smith flew back there in 1933 to raise money by providing joy flights.
