VH-UVH was never officially registered after it was badly damaged before the process was completed. It was owned by famed aviator Jimmy Melrose when it force landed near Bundanoon, New South Wales, on December 3, 1935 injuring Melrose and tearing the wing off the Gull. The wreckage was taken to Sydney (Mascot) airport. Recovered, Melrose sailed to the UK and bought a Heston Phoenix in which he would killed in July 1936. The application for registration of the Gull was withdrawn and -UVH reallocated to a Porterfield.

Photo taken the day it departed Oakland for Wheeler Field, Hawaii on the first leg of a flight to Australia. It disappeared without trace. It is speculated that it overshot Hawaii after more favourable winds than forecast. The captain, renowned Australian pilot Charles Ulm, claimed the Envoy would float for days, so did not carry a lifeboat. He perished with his two crew.

Bert Hinkler made the first solo flight from the UK to Australia in 15 days in G-EBOV arriving at Darwin on February 22, 1928. A few weeks later he flew to the national capital, Canberra, to meet prime minister Stanley Bruce. Hinkler landed on the parade ground of the Duntroon military college where there were facilities suitable for such an auspicious occasion. Canberra's aerodrome was nothing more than a paddock.

This wonderful photo was picked up for a mere $2 and shows VH-BRC on the Derwent River at Hobart. The Ansett Sandringhams operated direct from Sydney Harbour while landplanes routed via Melbourne. When competitors' started a same-plane DC-4 service from Sydney via Launceston it cut the flying boat's time advantage to a mere 20 minutes (in a four-hour flight) while greatly reducing costs.
