Sold in the US N5519V in April 1958. There were three DC-4s allocated VH-ANG and this is the third. The first one was sold a few months after delivery and became VH-BPD in April 1948. It too was named Palana. The second was diverted to Air Ceylon before delivery. It later became VH-INY. Photo by: Barrie Colledge

Escaped being impressed by the RAAF at the start of World War II to help maintain air services between Tasmania and the Australian mainland. Crashed into Tanners Bay, Flinders Island, Tasmania on May 29, 1942, when attempting to return to the island following an engine failure. The DH89A registered in Australia as VH-UXZ in 2005 is not this aircraft. It wears the same livery as the original VH-UXZ except it is named Lady Penrhyn.

ANA standardised on the Wright Cyclone as used by its prewar DC-3 fleet. VH-IND was an ex USAAF C-47A and also received a passenger door in place the C-47s double doors as part of the civil conversion. After ANA was acquired by Ansett, VH-IND was transferred in 1960 to the group's New Zealand subsidiary, SPANZ, as ZK-BYE. It was refitted with Pratt and Whitney Twin Wasps. This photo is captioned Daly Waters 1940 but that cannot be the case. After just 9 months with ANA and the start of WW2, VH-ACB was leased to the RAAF as A30-4 and camouflaged. The lease ended in May 1940 and ANA markings reapplied. However the Douglas Aircraft logos applied to the nose and tail at the factory, and seen here, were not reapplied. The photo is at one of the south-eastern Australian airports served by ANA, most likely Essendon or Archerfield. ACB written off in a forced landing near Essendon on April 14, 1943. An oddity among the DC-3s acquired by ANA after World War II. Ordered by American Airlines, it was taken over by the USAAC on the production line and delivered as a C-50. Fitted with a C-47 style double cargo door but on the starboard side instead of port. ANA used it as a freighter. Sold in New Zealand as ZK-BWE in 1955. Fitted with Pratt and Whitney R-1830 engines in place of Wright R-1820s before delivery.
