Aircraft of No 218 Sqn was reportedly hit by German flak and landed on the beach at Vlissingen (Flushing). The crew is given as Captain J F Chisholm and Sergeant Williams. Numerous planes of the warring nations in Flanders ended up in Zeeland province and were interned, this machine becoming DEH-446 in Dutch service. It was returned in 1920, minus the engine. The grand building is the Grand Hotel des Bains, destroyed during the liberation of Vlissingen in November 1944. Photo from: Foto Dert / Nederlands Instituut voor Militaire Historie

Delivered in 1947, A80-1 was the first helicopter for the RAAF and the Australian military. Written off when it crashed into the Murray River on or about December 4, 1951. The RAAF didn't get into helicopters in a big way until the 1960s and the Vietnam War the arrival of UH-1 Iroquois. Went on to operate CH-47 Chinook, AS350 Squirrel and UH-60 Black Hawks. In 1989 all helicopters were transferred to the Army. Today civilian operators provide SAR at RAAF bases. Photo from: National Library of Australia

'American Eagle plane at the Glendale assembly plant.' This may refer to the Kinner Airplane & Motor Corporation. With the Kinner K-5 radial engine the A-129, developed from the A-101 by Giuseppe Bellanca, was known as the 'long-nose Eagle'. The photo is dated 1928 or 1929. A-129 referred to the year 1929 but perhaps the type appeared earlier. Certainly NC523 visited Clover Field, Santa Monica on 26 March 1929. Photo by: John Underwood / Glendale Public Library

VH-USE was the only DH86 in the Qantas fleet when its tail failed near Belmont, nine miles from Brisbane on February 20, 1942. Nine lives lost. When the RAAF returned impressed DH86s to Qantas their fins were strengthened before entering service. The loss of -USE added to the unease over the integrity of the DH86 airframe after earlier structural failures. Photo from: State Library of Queensland

The Klemm L 26 was a more powerful development of the L 25. This example was pictured over the Dresden district of Strehlen. The Sturm Cigarette Company was affiliated with the Nazi Party's Sturmabteilung (SA). SA troopers were told to smoke only this brand and the SA received royalties in return. The SA insignia is on the tailfin and the aircraft was registered to Arthur Dressler, the owner of the Dresden tobacco company. Photo by: Walter Hahn / SLUB / Deutsche Fotothek

This Wal was to be added to Roald Amundsen's aborted North Pole flight with N-24 and N-25 as a gift from Benito Mussolini. This did not go ahead and Mussolini suggested that Antonio Locatelli's crew should fly to the North Pole on their own. Instead, Locatelli left Marina di Pisa on 25 July 1924 for a North Atlantic crossing, more or less joining the US Army Douglas World Cruisers on the final legs of their circumnavigation of the globe. The Wal had to make an emergency landing off Greenland on 21 August. The crew was rescued after four days by the American picket ship USS Richmond. Helicopter designed by Dutch engineer Albert Gillis von Baumhauer. A short first flight was made on 5 September 1925 and a more substantial one on 10 February 1926. The vehicle featured a tail rotor, powered by its own engine, but lacking pitch control. Slow progress was made until the helicopter crashed on 29 August 1930. By then working for the Dutch CAA, Von Baumhauer was killed in the crash of Boeing Stratoliner NX19901 on 18 March 1939. Photo from: Nederlands Instituut voor Militaire Historie

The De Schelde shipyard in Vlissingen (Flushing) took over the aircraft building branch of the Pander furniture factory, and in 1935 Theo Slot designed the Scheldemusch (Scheldt Sparrow) light single-seat sport aircraft. It flew well but the six examples built remained unsold. In June 1937 this one was demonstrated to the military at Soesterberg who were interested mainly in the triciycle landing gear.
