The Friendship looked superb in Sempati's livery - this one was a 1969-build aircraft that first served Danish Aero Lease, being sold to the Indonesian airline in 1.76 after a lease to Aviaco. Damaged in a landing incident in 1.93 but repaired and continued to fly until wfu at Halim in 10.97, then b/u there in 10.01

A venture onto the terminal roof service area gave this view of the famous Alliance SP which served SAA's Uganda/Tanzania/Rwanda joint op 1995-99, just in from LHR. After return to SAA, this 1976 machine was scrapped at JNB in 10.02. Behind, an Inversija IL-76 is being pushed back using its special tow-bar, with Lake Victoria visible beyond. On final over the lake, we had a major bird-strike which took out engine no.3, so I had to wait all day for another SP to ferry up from JNB before going on to DAR

The Savage was a 1950s carrier bomber, later converted for refuelling/recon. The AJ-2 version had two P&W R-2800s and a J33 turbojet in the tail, good for over 40,000ft if piston engine stalling around 35k could be overcome. After service with the USN 1954-59 as 130418 and as firebomber N101Z, this one was used by AVCO Lycoming for jet testing in 1971/72. The only survivor of 143 built, flown to USN museum at Pensacola on 9.5.84 and restored to USN marks. When I recently sent the pic round my friends, no-one could name it!

Originally delivered to VASP as PP-SRF in 12.58, this beauty was bought by PLUNA in 11.75 and was preserved airside at one end of the terminal at MVD after withdrawal from service. Later moved and abandoned in another spot away from the terminal; condition increasingly poor but now fortunately saved by the Uruguayan Museum of Aeronautics for restoration in original colours. The livery seen here was current on B737s when the aircraft was put on display, but too late to actually have been carried by Viscounts in service

Sadly this Belfast was broken up at Southend on 23/24.10.08 after plans to put it back in service alongside sister-ship RP-C8020 (ex G-HLFT) down-under fell through. Seen here with PANAF titles (company wanted to buy all 10 Belfasts but never got going) prior to civilianisation for TAC/Heavylift, G-BEPS was ferried MSE-SEN on 30.3.01 for storage. Looking immaculate on the HAECO ramp, this Herk of the RMAF's 14 Sqdn was first received in 10.76. Still with them and much more recently converted to stretched C-130H-30 standard in Malaysia, now flying in the inevitable grey colours

A nice line of classics, typical of Southend in the Seventies. SE-FTI didn't last long as such and went on to Merpati, EAS and back to Merpati again. Next is G-BAMX looking as though it is badly corroded - broken up a year later. Then ex-EPA Carvair CF-EPW and Aer Turas DC-4 EI-ARS with UN High Commissioner for Refugees titles
