Some 40 aircraft of dictator Rafael Trujillo's amazing Dominican air force, with the spicier types behind the BT-13, AT-6 and Stearman trainers. The dark aircraft, number 60, on the right is a P-38 Lightning. Farther back are the two Dominican B-17s, a C-46 Commando and a B-25 Mitchell. There were also Beaufighters, Venturas and Catalinas. The airport site is now in the centre of the capital Santo Domingo, then named Ciudad Trujillo. The airport itself was named for the same US general as Joint Base Andrews - did he give all these toys? Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

The Do 215 reconnaissance bomber was an export variant of the Do 17. Batches ordered by Sweden, Yugoslavia and the Netherlands were taken by the Luftwaffe instead, but this is one of two Do 215B-3 aircraft that were delivered to the Soviet Union early in 1940. Dutch pilots flew five British-registered Dominies on an early UN mission in the Middle East. KLM captains Herman Bolte and Henk Nijdam set out in G-AKOP and G-AGWP from Schiphol on 27 August 1948. The British registrations were removed upon arrival in Beirut. G-AGWP became UN-71. The aircraft ended up in Congo in 1960 as OO-CJE. Photo from: Nederlands Instituut voor Militaire Historie

The man blocking the registration might be carrying the squadron pet on his shoulder but it is probably D-AKLQ, not AKLO. Both D-AKLQ and D-VDZA (c/n 5637 or 5837) served as ambulance aircraft with Sanitätsflugbereitschaft 7 in Greece during the war, though the photo may have been taken earlier. D-AKLO is also said to have existed but no details are given. D-AKLQ was rebuilt after a crash in 1935 and its c/n is also reported as 5171. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

The prototype of the Ha 139 is launched from Schwabenland, one of several catapult ships operated by Lufthansa for its transatlantic airmail service. These vessels did not refuel seaplanes in mid-ocean, but were stationed in ports in Gambia and Brazil to provide assisted take-offs. In 1937-1938 two ships were based in Horta, Azores, and in Port Washington, New York City, to support a fast trial service across the North Atlantic. Almost the same photograph was made by Rudy Arnold, proving this is off City Island, New York. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

This photo seems to show Dutch Sea Fury pilot training in Britain. We have no details about this but 6-12 (F-12) crashed near Port Isaac in Cornwall in August 1951. Could this be St Eval? Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)
