Some 40 aircraft of dictator Rafael Trujillo's amazing Dominican air force, with the spicier types behind the BT-13, AT-6 and Stearman trainers. The dark aircraft, number 60, on the right is a P-38 Lightning. Farther back are the two Dominican B-17s, a C-46 Commando and a B-25 Mitchell. There were also Beaufighters, Venturas and Catalinas. The airport site is now in the centre of the capital Santo Domingo, then named Ciudad Trujillo. The airport itself was named for the same US general as Joint Base Andrews - did he give all these toys? Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)
