Note the TWA sticker placed by someone with a sense of humour. Stored for several months ex 55-3321 US Army. Became C-GLCV in Jan 1975. Written off by an electrical fire whilst on the ground at Sept Iles QC 12 Mar 1976.

US Army Otter 58-1710 was delivered April 29, 1959. Deployed in Vietnam, the aircraft was struck off strength in 1969. It was registered CF-QRI in 1972 to fly out of Campbell River, BC with Trans Mountain Air Services. Re-named Gulf Air Aviation in 1976, the aircraft is pictured after taken over for Air BC. Registered to Harbour Air in April 1985, the floatplane was written off on May 8, 1991. When the pilot attempted to reverse course in a valley during marginal VFR conditions, the aircraft settled into trees. All survived, but the aircraft remains are still stored at the time of uploading.

Built in 1956. Converted to a Vazar Turbine Otter in 1993. Now a long-serving member of Kenmore Air's fleet. Seen here returning home to base at Seattle's Kenmore Air Harbour on a summer evening in 1999, even at that time more than forty years old.

About to go transatlantic to St John, NB (together with N17683). Entered military service in 1961 as G305 of the Ghana Air Force at Takoradi, retiring in 1973. When phogtographed, the Otter was owned by Air Craftsmen Ltd of St John, NB who specialised in buying and refurbishing ex-mil Otters, and then selling them on to commercial operators. N17682 then became C-GCLP, operating on Canada's Pacific Coast. After Vazar turbine conversion, it re-entered Harbour Air's service in 2006. Photographed it again in 2010 at Vancouver, in red maple leaf colours for Canada's Winter Olympics.

Delivered to McIntyre Porcupine Mines Ltd in May 1959, CF-LLL is pictured during its last days with the company. Replaced by Twin Otter CF-GJK, the aircraft was sold to Bannock Aerospace in November 1971. First leased to and later sold to Cross Lake Air Service, it worked northern Manitoba based in Wabowden, MB 1971 - 2003. Sold after Cross Lake Air Service shut down, it was converted to a Vazar Turbine Otter. It is current with Northwestern Air lease (since 2008) at the time of uploading.

N17683 became C-GNLA, initially with Newfoundland Labrador Air Transport, and was operated commercially on Canada's Atlantic seaboard mainly from Goose Bay, NL. Written off in October 1990 when it sank into Shapio Lake, NL, following a landing accident.

Ex US Army U-1A 55-3288. To N1457H in 1973 and used as an instructional airframe at Merril Field, Anchorage. Later civilianized by Western World Retrievals who used it on a 1985-86 expedition to Greenland (note the "Western World Retrievals Inc - Greenland Expedition 85-86" logo), in an attempt to find and retrieve six P-38 Lightnings which, having made a forced landing there in 1942, became buried under the icecap. In 1988 the aircraft was damaged near Wrangell AK, while registered to Diamond Aviation, when it hit a snow-bank in poor visibility. While attempting to salvage the damaged Otter, a Bell 205 dropped it from 1,500ft resulting in a total write off!

With the Royal Canadian Mounted Police from new in 1954 as CF-MPO. Bought by Alaska West Air Service Inc, Kenai, Alaska, in 1996, becoming N87AW and immediately being turbined as a Vazar DHC-3T conversion. Seen here on very short finals for touchdown on Anchorage's Lake Hood. Carries a "STOL" logo on the tail.

Built as U-1A US Army s/n 58-1715. This a/c saw action in the Vietnam War, being assigned to the 18th Aviation Company based at Nha Trang, SVN. Transferred to the Civil Air Patrol in June 1977. It is still active, now registered as N336AK, and has been upgraded with a Garret TPE 331-1 turboprop engine.

This U-1 was assigned to VX-6 in Antarctica and participated in Operation Deep Freeze II and III. After returning to the U.S., it was assigned to the US Navy Test Pilot School at NAS Patuxent River, where it was redesignated NU-1B. Its last assignment was NAS Pensacola, attached to the Naval Air Training Command for general utility use. To the museum in 1975 in flyable condition. Heavily damaged by Hurricane Ivan in 2004, it has been restored and now is on display inside the Hangar Bay One building.

Ex-Ethiopian Army. One of four ex-Ethiopian Army Otters (c/n 132 ex-EA51, c/n 347 ex-EA50, c/n 349 ex-EA52 & c/n 350 ex-EA53) bought by Newcal Aviation and shipped to its Safi maintenance facility in 1991. Stored at Safi until 1994 when they were shipped to the USA.

The prototype of the DHC-3 Otter, first flown in 1951 as CF-DYK-X, received an 'experimental' military serial but remained with the DHC factory and was used as a flying wind tunnel in 1957-58, carrying a DHC-4 Caribou model with an enormous vertical tail. First use of the registration on a Viking Turbine Otter. The customer was Maldivian Airways, but the deal fell through so it was converted to Vazar Turbine Otter for Sri Lankan Air Taxi instead. Eventually it found its way to Harbour Airways of Vancouver where it still flies in 2022 as C-FJHA. [Photo by David Manchip.]

This DHC-3 Otter has spent most of its commercial life flying in Quebec since 1971. It was seen in April 2016 at Montréal / Laval - Saint-François airport and seaplane base, which is a private facility owned by Clement Contant and his son Simon. It doesn't appear on any aviation charts, probably because of the high voltage electric power lines crossing the property! In early 2000, C-FAZX was converted to an Orenda Orenda V8 piston engine, in 2012 to a TRACE piston engine and in March 2018 back to a R-1340 radial engine for Air Tunilik. This Otter was originally shipped by sea to De Havilland Australia at Bankerstown in April 1958. Assembled and delivered to Qantas Empire Airways August 21st, it remained in Australia until sold 10 years later. Ferried back to Canada for AirWest August 17, 1968, C-FXRI is flying in Saskatchewan with a turbine engine at the time of uploading.
