A rare photo of a Dorand AR.1 observation aircraft, serving on the Macedonian Front of WWI. The original comment speaks of aircraft in 'Greek colours', but actually, French insignia were worn here and units, including Escadrille 532 which was based at Gorgopi (or Gorgop) in 1918, were Franco-Greek, with mostly French pilots and personnel. 43-49664 to French air force in December 1944. Seen here repratriating prisoners from Germany in May 1945. The location is given as Hengen near Stuttgart. Spitfires of GC I/7 'Provence' and GC II/7 'Nice' were based there according to ECPAD and are seen in other photos. We could find no other reference to an airfield near Hengen, 40 km south of Stuttgart. 349664 became F-BAIE of Air France in 1946. To Air Cameroun in 1965 as TR-ABJ. The seaplane side of Marseille - Marignane airport. A few weeks after this picture was taken, this Vichy French airliner was attacked by RAF Hurricanes off Algiers, presumably by mistake, and four occupants were killed. Perhaps as a result, F-AREJ was in Algeria when it was taken by the Allies and it survived the war to be used by Air France until September 1946. Photo from: ECPAD

The H-246 was a modern flying boat intended for the Mediterranean routes of Air France, and first flown on 30 September 1937. Seven examples built including one for the French navy. A few were confiscated by the Luftwaffe in November 1942 and used in Finland. F-AREJ and F-AREL turned Free French in Algeria, and surived the war to be used by Air France until September 1946. An early Go 242 glider in Greece in September 1941 - the first deliveries were only in August. This was after the airborne invasion of Crete and the 1500 Go 242s built were mostly used for resupply flights, which seems terribly inefficient. Photo by: Edward-Josef Petertil / ECPAD

Delivered to Régie Air Afrique in March 1939, named Brazzaville. Under the Vichy regime, it operated with Air France titles though officially it belonged to a larger entity called Réseau Aérien Français. Seen here in Free French military service at Algiers - Maison Blanche, also the airport where this Super Electra was last noted abandoned in the 1960s. Photo by: Robert Moisy / ECPAD

Although this Lodestar survives in Finland, its early history is not easily found. Just before the fall of France in 1940, F-ARTF was delivered to French state company Air Afrique. In July 1940 it flew from Morocco to Dakar, carrying personnel of a Curtiss Hawk 75 squadron. Turned from Vichy to Free French, it is seen at Algiers - Maison Blanche in 1944. It wears Air France titles plus an illegible text above the cabin windows, and the Air France winged seahorse on the nose. To Aéro-Africaine after the war. To OH-VKU in 1953.
