Society of British Aircraft Constructors Display at Hendon. The 'Fairey multi-gun fighter biplane' performing is the Fairey Fantôme prototype, designed for Belgium, which first flew on 6 June 1935 and crashed at Evere on 17 July. The Bulldog is the former Bulldog Mk.III demonstrator, R-7, fitted here with a Mercury VIS engine. The Mk.IV was ordered by the Finnish air force. Putting aircraft on skis in winter was still commonplace in northern countries in the 1930s, and at Västerås - Hässlö, on Lake Mälaren, an ice runway was apparently preferred over a snowy airfield. The Bulldog's serial has a prefix for F1 wing, based at Västerås until 1983. The proper serial 212 is on the tailfin. Photo from: Flygvapenmuseum

Seen here on Friday, the first of the three public day's of the Farnborough Airshow. On Sunday she crashed while being flown by Ian Williamson who was injuried, but made a full recovery. Can now be seen fully restored (how did they do that!) at the RAF Museum Hendon.

Amazingly the pilot of this aircraft was thrown clear and escaped with cuts and bruises. It is remarkable that, after many years, enough of this wreckage was able to be assembled into the static restoration at the Royal Air Force Museum Hendon, as K2227.

'K2227' was reduced to a heap of rubble in a crash at Farnborough in 1964, but has been marvelously restored. It was originally a factory demonstrator, G-ABBB. The civil registration was cancelled in 1961, but the Shuttleworth Collection had a permit to fly vintage aircraft unregistered.
