Another photo shows that this is Second Series BuNo 6729, ordered in 1940 and modified here to PBM-3S (Stripped) standard with reduced defensive armament for anti-submarine patrols. The location seems to be NAS Norfolk, although the reported unit, VPB-206 (VP-206 until October 1944), was based at Key West, Quonset Point and Elizabeth City from April 1944 when it received the PBM-3S. Martin Mariner of VPB-214 on beaching gear at its NAS Norfolk base. This anti-submarine warfare squadron became operational here on 23 January 1944 but its strength was reduced from twelve to nine aircraft on 1 October. In January 1945 it was sent to NAS Coco Solo, Panama Canal Zone, for ASW patrols on the Pacific side. The squadron was disbanded at Norfolk on 18 June 1945, having left its aircraft behind at Coco Solo, and 48151 was lost off Coco Solo two days later on 20 June 1945. Believed to be A70-6 based on nose art on the left side that matches a photo of A70-6. The owner said the same artwork was on the aircraft when acquired. A70-6 was originally delivered to the US Navy as PBM-3C 6526, later converted to PBM-3S. It was one 12 RAAF Mariner transports disposed at Lake Boga, Victoria, after WW2. Those that were not scrapped found non-aviation uses, including two that had nose sections converted to caravans. Current status unknown but the Eureka museum has been replaced by the Ballarat Aviation Museum

In 1955 the Dutch bought 17 former US Navy PBM-5s for the defence of Netherlands New Guinea, which was claimed by Indonesia. The Mariner turned out to be a death trap - six of the large amphibians crashed with considerable loss of life. An Avenger is seen on the right here.
