The progenitor of the Burnelli CBY-3 Loadmaster was the Burnelli UB-14 which first flew in the USA in 1934. A very similar but structurally different aircraft, the Cunliffe-Owen OA-1, first flew from Eastleigh on 12 January 1939 and is seen over the Eastern Docks in Southampton. A&AEE were critical of the design and building quality of the prototype. It was flown to Africa in 1941, apparently by Jim Mollison, to be used as a transport by the Free French. It was burnt in a victory bonfire in Egypt in August 1945. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

Caption on the photo says Angeles Mesa Drive airfield. According to several sources this was the original name of Burbank airport before it became United Airport in 1930. Others claim it was Rogers airfield which closed in 1931. The background in the photo is too open to be Rogers, which was very compact. NC753E's fate is unknown. Originally built as the We-Will racer. Two revamps led to it becoming the first of three Wedell-Williams 44 racers. It went though further modifications over its racing life. NR278V crashed at Cleveland during the Thompson Trophy race on September 3, 1934, killing the pilot. A replica of this aircraft registered N278V was on the US register from 1985 to 2019. Not repaired after this accident. RNZAF Eyreton was also known as Harris Field. While some sites say the aerodrome was never built this accident was not the only one at Harris Field during World War II. The marker behind shows that on this day at least a runway was marked out. Eyreton may have functioned as a landing ground for student pilots but not otherwise used. Photo from: RNZAF/Air Force Museum of New Zealand

In the winter of 1917/18 pilot training for the Royal Flying Corps/RAF in Canada was moved to the Fort Worth region to escape the harsh Canadian winter. They were based at three US Army airfields close to Fort Worth. The caption on the photo says this is at Cresson which was not one the airfields. But the town of Cresson is a short distance from Benbrook airfield which was used by the Canadians. The lack of any infrastructure in the photo suggests this is a landing ground and not one of the Army airfields. C760 transferred to the US military. Photo from: City of Vancouver Archives
