Originally built as the We-Will racer. Two revamps led to it becoming the first of three Wedell-Williams 44 racers. It went though further modifications over its racing life. NR278V crashed at Cleveland during the Thompson Trophy race on September 3, 1934, killing the pilot. A replica of this aircraft registered N278V was on the US register from 1985 to 2019.
