This old trainer was the first aircraft purchased by the Army Air Service in large quantities. This example was obtained from Ohio State University in 1957 and is now on display at the National Museum of the USAF.
Flying this OS2U from the USS Indiana, Lt. j.g. Rollin M. Batten Jr. was awarded the Navy Cross for rescuing two downed aircrew under heavy Japanese fire on 4th July, 1944. The aircraft was earmarked for preservation in 1947 and, after a difficult five year restoration, is now on display at the Smithsonian NASM Udvar-Hazy Center.
