In early 1940, deliveries of the EP-106 started via Norway. Eventually, only half of the 120 Ep-106 ordered were delivered as the USA halted export to some countries. The aircraft were designated J9 and used for fighter and reconnaissance duties. Serial 2134 was taken on strength in July 1940, it moved to F3 at Malmen in 1948 and was retired from service in 1949 and added to the historical collection.

The P-35 was first single-seat, all-metal pursuit aircraft with retractable gear and enclosed cockpit to go into regular service with the Army Air Corps, and 76 were accepted in 1937-38. Ironically, the Japanese Navy ordered 20 of a two-seat version, becoming the only US-built aircraft used operationally by Japan in WW2. Sweden also bought 60 improved EP-106s, known as J 9s. This aircraft is actually 36-404, displayed as the P-35A of the 35th Pursuit Squadron commander stationed in the Philippines in 1941. It is the only surviving P-35, although two of the J 9s and an AT-12 still exist

Undelivered aircraft were requisitioned in October 1940 by the US government and handed to the USAAC. The EP-106 was the export version of the P-35 fighter and designated J9 in Sweden. The USAAC called the ex-Swedish single-seaters Republic P-35A and the two-seaters Republic AT-16. Seversky had changed its name to Republic in 1939. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution
