The one and only Canadair C-5, like most Canadian built DC-4, was pressurised but uniquely powered by Pratt and Whitney R-2800 radials engines as used on the DC-6. The RR Merlin engines of all other Canadair-built DC-4s resulted in very high cabin noise and the C-5 was always intended as a VIP aircraft. It remained in service until 1966 and was then sold in the US as N17599. Scrapped soon after. Photo from: Library and Archives Canada

Aeronca bought a licence to build the Erco Ercoupe and called it the 12AC Chum. Two examples were built of which the second had a single tailfin, conventional controls and all-metal construction including the cladding of the wings. With Aeronca's own 7AC Champ selling by the thousands in 1946 and 1947, the project was dropped. Photo by: Hans Groenhoff / Smithsonian Institution

Rollout of Frank Piasecki's PV-2 helicopter. According to the Vertical Flight Society, P-V Engineering Forum started in 1937 Callowhill Street in Philadelphia. A modern building now stands here but this would be the back side of the house, on Shamokin Street. The PV-2 first flew on 11 April 1943. The photo is dated October 1943, presumably in error. The Super Frelon was so named because it was preceded by the Sud SE.3200 Frelon (hornet), designed by the former Sud-Est company. The photo is understood to have been taken at the time of the prototype's first flight from Le Bourget on 10 June 1959. The tailboom almost looks too stubby and endplate fins were added to the second prototype. Various problems persisted, however, including one ton of excess weight. Photo from: Sud

Los Angeles industrialist Thomas W Kendall bought 13 Catalinas for conversion into air yachts similar to N69043. In 1960, Kendall set out from London in N5593V with his own family and a photographer on board. After seeing the pyramids, they alighted off the Saudi coast on 22 March to relax on the beach, but the next morning, they were attacked and taken prisoner by a group of armed Bedouins who took them for Israeli commandos. The bullet-riddled remains of the Catalina are still present on the beach - see other photo. Photo by: David Lees / Life

First flown in 1915, the Vickers ES.1 fighter evolved from the Barnwell Bullet, an unauthorized design by Vickers test pilot Harold Barnwell. The type was pretty fast but difficult to fly, with a poor view for the pilot. Of six machines built, RFC serial 7760 was the final example. It was allocated to No 50 (Home Defence) Squadron in Kent in June 1916. Misidentified as a Vickers FB.14 in Canadian archive. Photo from: Library and Archives Canada

The occasion was a Vietnamese new year's reception by South Vietnamese president Ngô Đình Diệm 'in the central highlands'. The Bird Dog was delivered to the French army in Indochina, arriving in Saigon by ship in 1954. It was transferred to the South Vietnamese air force in 1955. See photo 448153 for details of the C-47s on the right. The landing aircraft may be well be F-VNAG. Photo by: John Dominis / Life

Arrivals for a Vietnamese new year's reception by South Vietnamese president Ngô Đình Diệm 'in the central highlands'. The Hàng Không Viêt Nam C-47 still sports a French colonial registration, F-VNAG. It later became XV-NIA. The third C-47 is 348008 (43-48008) of the French air force, which still maintained a limited presence. On the far left is a South Vietnamese air force O-1 Bird Dog, 51-12831.
