This was the first of the new generation of modern, all-metal, American airliners in Australia. It was registered new to Holyman's Airways on 5 May 1936. Holyman's later became ANA. The aircraft was struck off and broken up at Essendon on 19 December 1947. This photo is probably after repairs following an accident at Forrest on 2 February 1942. The port undercarriage hit a boulder and collapsed, and the strut went through the wing. The propeller was also damaged. (CAHS/Ivan Hodder collection)

Ordered by American Airlines but delivered to the USAAF, VH-ANH ended up in Australia with the Allied Directorate of Air Transport. The USAAF, RAAF and Guinea Airways flew it with the callsign VHCDJ. Guinea Airways bought it postwar but was soon transferred to ANA. When Ansett took over ANA -ANH was passed between the various airlines in the group until withdrawn from use in 1970. Now part of the Australian National Aviation Museum, Moorabbin. Photo from: Libraries Tasmania

Sold in New Zealand as ZK-BKD in 1955. Seen here with Wright R-1820 engines. It had been built as a C-47A with Pratt and Whitney R-1830s and for most of its time with ANA retained those engines. But ANA preferred Wrights and -ANU may have been the last of its war surplus C-47s to be converted. When it arrived in New Zealand, R-1830s were reinstalled. VH-UFF was originally delivered to the RAAF as A33-1 but was in service only a few months when Holyman's Airways asked to buy it to replace a crashed DH86. Holyman's had it for a year then it became ANA. In June 1938 -UFF was transferred to Airlines of Australia and was still with AOA when it was impressed by the RAAF as A33-3. During the war it was operated by Guinea Airways (as VH-UFF again). In 1956 it was sold in New Caledonia as F-OAVG. Photo from: State Library of Queensland
