This was the first of the new generation of modern, all-metal, American airliners in Australia. It was registered new to Holyman's Airways on 5 May 1936. Holyman's later became ANA. The aircraft was struck off and broken up at Essendon on 19 December 1947. This photo is probably after repairs following an accident at Forrest on 2 February 1942. The port undercarriage hit a boulder and collapsed, and the strut went through the wing. The propeller was also damaged. (CAHS/Ivan Hodder collection)

The West Australian Airways hangar constructed in 1929 with the adjoining passenger hostel. Forrest (pop.18) is about halfway across the vast Nullabor Plain and was an overnight stop for the airline's DH66 Hercules. The hangar is the oldest still standing in Australia. The hostel has been demolished.

Became VH-UJP in 1931 when Australia adopted the VH- prefix. -UJP was to have a long life by the standards of the day and in 1936 was sold in Papua New Guinea where it was destroyed at Salamaua by a Japanese air raid in February, 1942. In PNG it had been used as a freighter and at one stage flew dismantled trucks to the gold mines. What parts did not fit inside were strapped to the outside.
