German AF 2219 built 1942 and coded KI-GX, later recoded 3 black. On a mission on 05-Oct-1943 from Petsamo in Finland it was running into heavy snowstorms and ran out of fuel. The pilot bailed out and the aircraft hit the ground west of Kongsfjord in Norway. In 1986 the wreck was recovered from the crash site and restored for display at the Norsk Luftfartsmuseum in Bodø. It carries the 14/JG5 badge

Perhaps I am perverse, but amongst the beautifully restored exhibits in the marvellous Technical Museum, this one was my favourite. Belonging to the St G.5 Squadron on the Northern front this aircraft crashed in Norway on 2nd July, 1942. The wreck was found in 1994 and acquired by the museum in 1997. It's preservation in this condition seems more poignant than if it was restored. Magnificent !

A Romanian Ju88 in which a young pilot defected to Cyprus in 7.43, being intercepted by four Hurricanes over Limassol. Given RAF serial HK959 and flown to Alexandria then handed over to the USAAF and ferried by air via Acension to Wright Field in 10.43. Placed on display in Luftwaffe colours, which were later changed to those shown here, before being restored to Romanian AF livery; now inside the USAFM

To reduce reliance on runways, a Zero-Length Launch (ZELL) system was conceived to blast F-104s into the sky from trucks with booster rockets. Apparently this worked well but was prohibitively expensive. This F-104G was built by Lockheed in 1960. It carried out eight ZELL take-offs at Edwards AFB in 1963, coded DA-102, and seven more at Lechfeld in 1966.

This is a magnificent restoration of this 1942 built fighter in the Technical Museum in Berlin. The aircraft crash landed on a frozen lake between Murmansk and Leningrad on January 11th 1943. It sank when the ice thawed and was recovered in 1991 and was acquired by the museum in 1997.

First flown in 10.43, the push-pull "Arrow" was the fastest production piston fighter of WWII, capable of 472mph at 21,000ft. This sole remaining example of 37 built was taken to the USA for evaluation after the war. Ferried from Oberwiesenfeld to Cherbourg escorted by two P-51s, the Do 335 was easily able to out-pace the escorts and arrived 45 minutes ahead. When returned to Dornier for restoration in 1974, explosive charges to blow off the tail and rear propeller in emergency were found still intact

Despite the superbly arranged variety of special scheme F-4s, the best efforts of the Phantom Pharewell photoday organisers could not overcome the weather. View of JG.71's blue & gold bird taken from the top of a HAS after a very slippery climb. This machine made its last flight at the show next day, marking the end of 40 years of the F-4 with the Luftwaffe, and will be preserved on the Wittmund gate

One of my favourite exhibits at this fine museum, nicely preserved in original colours (which is more than can be said for the other Pembroke in the collection, falsely painted in RAF colours although in fact another Luftwaffe C.Mk.54). One of 34 supplied to Germany for the Air Force and Navy, previously serialled XA+104 and served the FVSt at Lechfeld and later Neubiberg in the telecoms/check role

Originally delivered to the RAF in 1954 as WK137, this eye-catching Canberra was initially intended to be used as a target tug out of Oberpfaffenhofen from 1966 with Eprobungstelle 61 but instead was used for various systems trials. It then went on to perform survey work with special camera fits at the Mil Geo Amt, Koln, becoming 99+34. Last flight 27.10.93 and now in a museum at Schwenningen. In 1991 the lower wing surfaces from an RAF TT.18 were fitted after an engine fire; the yellow and black stripes can still be seen

This exceptional exhibit is the only remaining example of the world's first operational jet-powered bomber. Although some 210 were built in the late stages of WWII, few entered service; those that did proved almost impossible to intercept. Behind is the similarly extraordinary Dornier 335

The Luftwaffe received some 450 Thunderstreaks in cocooned condition, serving until 1964/67 with some going on to Greece and Turkey. This example served with JbG.36 at Rheine-Hopsten from 1961 until the unit re-equipped with F-104G Starfighters in 1965 and was ex-USAF 53-7058

It was very dark in this part of the museum - long exposure needed. The G-series Me-110 were night fighters; this one has FuG220b Liechtenstein SN-2 radar and was given Air Min serial AM34. Flown to Farnborough 1.8.45 and housed over the years at many locations in the UK before arriving at Hendon in 1980

Wearing the markings of AG 52, the Federal German Luftwaffe's second photo recce wing. It was disbanded in 1994 and its black panther head badge was then adopted by its elder sister wing, AG 51 'Immelmann'. AG 51 moved from Bremgarten in southwest Germany to Schleswig - Jagel in the early 1990s, absorbing the Tornado force of the German Navy. The wing was renamed TLG 51 in 2013.

One of only two surviving Ju 87 Stukas is in the Royal Air Force Museum Hendon's Battle of Britain Hall. It appears to have been a Ju 87D, converted to Ju 87G-2 anti-tank aircraft. The wings were detached at this time but this does give a fine view of the fuselage.
