One of the 13 aircraft assembled on the eastern boundary at Southend for the nascent British Historic Aircraft Museum. Formerly a research testbed with Cranfield University and Napier as G-36-3, G-29-1 and G-APRJ. Arrived from Cranfield on 9th May 1967. Sadly, this museum came to nought but was resurrected as the Historic Aircraft Museum (Southend) in 1972 with RF342 passing into its care. Of note is the Lancaster nose (from the pilot's windscreen forward) ex-TW911, fitted in the late 40s/early 50s.

One of the aircraft assembled at Southend for the nascent BHAM. Eventually passed into the Historic Aircraft Museum (Southend) and then was to become G-JETH. The wings spar attachments were found to be cut through so FB.3 WM983 was acquired and became G-JETH instead. XE489 with the wings of WM983 (in themselves from WV909!) was sold in the Netherlands. The aircraft marked as "XE489" at Charlwood is G-JETH with the fuselage of WM983 and just the wings from the original XE489.

One of the founding aircraft of Tony Osborne's British Historic Aircraft Museum. Arrived from Elstree, I believe, 10 days prior to this photo, on 19 March 1967. One of the founding aircraft of Tony Osborne's British Historic Aircraft Museum. Arrived by air from Shawbury 15 days prior to this photo, on 14 March 1967. Wearing BHAM logo on the entry door. Sadly, this museum came to nought but was resurrected as the Historic Aircraft Museum (Southend) in 1972. By that time TX211/G-AVHU had been vandalised. It donated its outer wings, rudder, tailplane & port engine to VL348/G-AVVO in the summer of 1971 and was scrapped late 1971/early 1972.

I recall being in a school biology lesson when this noisily arrived in the Southend circuit on 13.6.67 - we all ran to the windows and forgot about reproduction or whatever. A total of 661 "Flygande Tunnan" ("Flying Barrels") were built from 1950 to 1956, the largest production run for any SAAB aircraft. An English test pilot described it as "on the ground an ugly duckling - in the air, a swift". Eventually displayed in the HAM which closed in 1982, 29640 landed up in the MAM at Coventry
