The Tiny Mite started out as a development of the Culver Rigid Midget glider but by the time it flew in about 1948 it had evolved considerably. Its registration was cancelled in 1965. The old Grand Prairie Municipal Airport was a centre for gliding in the 1950s and hosted the Nationals in 1956. Encroaching air traffic in the busy Dallas area forced the gliders to move by the 1960s and the airport itself was replaced by a new municipal airport soon after. The old airport finally closed in 1976 after a period as a military airfield. Photo by: Hans Groenhoff / Smithsonian Institution
