At the height of the Border War and the UN sanctions against South Africa, SAA Air Cargo painted ZS-SAH in this very discrete and anonymous colour scheme to minimize all connection to the RSA. The registration is black on dark blue and almost invisible. The aircraft flew all over Europe and parts of Africa.

In 1972 British Midland Airways bought the entire South African Airways Viscount fleet including spare parts and a simulator. This is the former ZS-CDZ captured at then Jan Smuts International still in the basic SAA livery but without titles. It carries the registration G-AZLW. This registration was reserved but not taken. ZS-CDZ became G-AZNC. G-AZLW was a former Aerolinas Argentinas Comet 4 that Dan-Air bought for spares.

Lebombo has the distinction of being the last DC-4 off the production line at Santa Monica, CA. Joining the SAA fleet in August 1947, she has spent her entire service life in South Africa. She was involved in a mid-air collision with an SAAF Harvard near Durban in June 1962, but landed safely. Four years later, she joined the SAAF where she served as 6904 with 44 Sqd until the DC-4 fleet was retired in 1991. The following year, SAA bought her back and restored her to former glory and she went on several air show tours the following years.

This formation shot of SAA's DC-3 and DC-4 is interesting for several reasons. Both aircraft spent their service lives with the South African Air Force and South African Airways. ZS-BXF was delivered to the SAAF (via the RAF as was usual for Lend-Lease aircraft) at Nassau becoming the first 6821 in December 1943. She passed to SAA as ZS-BXF in August 1948 before re-joining the SAAF in February 1971 as 6888. Finally passing to the SAA Historical Flight in May 1991. ZS-BMH was the last DC-4 built and delivered to SAA in August 1947, going to the SAAF in 1964 and back to SAA in 1992.
