Delivered in January 1937 to Roger Wolfe Kahn (1907-1962), jazz musician, composer, and Grumman test pilot! In 1941 he acquired a G-44 Widgeon, also NC1700. The L-10 was impressed as a C-36A, 42-38341, in 1942, but written off within a few months. The second aircraft is a rare Fairchild 45A, NC16864, and next is the Fleetwings F-4 Sea Bird, NX16793. The Aeronca K was introduced early in 1937 and was an immediate success. By November 1937 the factory was turning out three Model Ks per day. The location is not the posh Long Island Aviation Club's airfield in Hicksville as indicated by the source. It is nearby Roosevelt Field, with the Roosevelt Aviation School building visible in the background. Photo by: Alfred Eisenstaedt / Life

45 TRS was the only USAF squadron to operate the RF-51D in Korea, although the squadron also had regular F-51Ds. The F-51D had camera ports in the rear fuselage and the pilot could also record what he saw using an AN/AMQ-1A voice recorder. B-26 Invaders in the background. From August 1952 the squadron replaced its RF-51Ds with RF-80 Shooting Stars. 44-84778 is listed as written off on 14 October 1952. Photo probably taken at Taegu or Kimpo. This rescue helicopter is listed as written off after an accident at Walker AFB, New Mexico on 27 May 1950, but it must have been repaired, because this photo is from the Korean War as other pictures of H-5Gs, undergoing open-air maintenance in the background, show more conclusively. 'Opening of the new Croydon airport [terminal].' The new buildings began operations on 20 January 1928 but were only officially opened on 2 May 1928. The old buildings on Plough Lane had not yet been fully demolished by then. The photo was most probably taken on 21 March when King Amaunalla of Afghanistan made a flight in G-EBOZ and inspected 'two lines of light aeroplanes, including privately owned DH Moths, which had been flown to Croydon.' G-EBOZ was still named City of Wellington on that occasion. It was renamed City of Arundel later on. Photo from: The Henry Ford

First flown on 22 September 1947, the S-53, naval designation HJS, was a bigger development of the S-51. It was a failure as the centre of gravity shifted too much with heavier payloads carried all forward of the engine, and the twin-rotor Piasecki HUP Retriever became the US Navy's new rescue helicopter instead. Sikorsky solved the problem by putting the engine in the nose of the S-55. BuNo 30370 was the second of two S-53 airframes built. Photo from: Vertical Flight Society

The C-142 tiltrotor failed to make it into service but 'United States of America' titles were worn as on VIP aircraft, probably because it was originally a joint USAF, Army and Navy project. Note the little horizontal tail rotor for pitch control. 62-5924 to NASA in 1968, to USAF Museum in 1970. Photo by: John Dominis / Life

The Condor prototype on its first flight over Long Island on 21 July 1929. Apparently TAT/TAT Maddux only trialled a few Condors and returned them as they were no match for the smaller Ford Tri-Motor. The EMB-202, sometimes called Ipanemão (big Ipanema) is a 1992 variant of the Ipanema cropduster. Attempts to run Ipanemas on ethanol led to the ethanol-powered EMB-202A version by 2004. The photographer was documenting the use of ethanol as fuel in Brazil. Photo by: Bob Fitch / Stanford University Libraries

Ex D-288, this F13 - not a Junkers-Larsen JL-6 - was used by Junkers' sales agency in the USA. In April 1928 it was active in the relief operation for the stranded W33 D-1167 Bremen. The co-pilot was Hugo Junkers' eldest daughter Hertha or Herta who ran the agency and was an aeronautical engineer. Her younger brother Erhard was also on board as a mechanic. In May, Hugo Junkers himself, visiting America, came to Ford in Dearborn with Herta and Erhard and the Bremen crew. NC87 to CF-AMX. Photo from: The Henry Ford

When D-1167 Bremen ended its transatlantic flight at remote Greenly Island, frozen Lac Nairne (then Lac Sainte-Agnès) became a busy transit hub. Floyd Bennett caught pneumonia here after flying in this Tri-Motor from Detroit with fellow hero Bernt Balchen. Bennett died on 25 April and Balchen carried the Bremen flyers from Lac Nairne to Washington, DC on 27 April to attend his funeral. The Tri-Motor was flying for the North American Newspaper Alliance (NANA) but Ford surely appreciated the publicity. This airframe became the oldest surviving Tri-Motor as N1077.
