The Aeronca K was introduced early in 1937 and was an immediate success. By November 1937 the factory was turning out three Model Ks per day. The location is not the posh Long Island Aviation Club's airfield in Hicksville as indicated by the source. It is nearby Roosevelt Field, with the Roosevelt Aviation School building visible in the background. Photo by: Alfred Eisenstaedt / Life

Engineer Alfred Verville left the US Army Air Service and joined the Buhl Aircraft Company where he designed the Airster three-seat open biplane. The CA-3A model had the distinction of receiving the first US type certificate, Approved Type Certificate 1. This example took part in the 1927 New York - Spokane Air Derby, flown by Nick Mamer. The National Air Races were held in Spokane, Washington, that year.

Demonstrated at the ELTA exhibition in Amsterdam in 1919 as G-5414, G-EAAF was shipped to the US in May 1920 with Handley Page intending to set up an airline there, but this was thwarted in court and the aircraft was impounded. It was taken over by Curtiss which had good relations with HP at this time, and is seen here during an event at Curtiss Field in 1922. It apparently survived here into 1925. One of two aircraft built for oil magnate SEJ Cox to compete in the 1920 Gordon Bennett air race at Etampes in France. Handling problems and poor takeoff performance led to a rushed conversion to a biplane. Texas Wildcat was written off when it flipped on landing at Etampes at the end of its short flight from the Morane factory where the conversion had been done. The other aircraft, named Cactus Kitten, shipped back the US without being uncrated. It was converted to a triplane and came second in the 1921 Pulitzer Trophy Race. Photo from: Library of Congress

In 1941, Langley Aircraft of Port Washington, Long Island, named for aviation pioneer Samuel Langley, built this twin-engined four-seater of a mahogany plywood composite material. This was known as a plastic and so this was called a 'plastic plane'. Photo date and fate of this prototype unknown, but by 1942 the attention would have shifted to the 2-4-90 second aircraft with 90-hp engines, bought by the US Navy as the XNL-1 trainer. Ironically, the 'non-strategic' plywood plastic turned out to be scarcer than aluminium. Port Washington had no runways and we found the photo was taken ten miles away at Roosevelt Field. The large hangar was just one in a row of seven. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution

With this Fokker Universal, Bert Acosta and Emile Burgin intended to retake the world endurance record which Clarence Chamberlin and Acosta had held briefly earlier in 1927. The attempt either did not happen or failed. The Splitdorf was reported wanted by the sheriff of Bergen County, New Jersey, in early 1928, and Connecticut suspended 'bad boy' B B Acosta's pilot licence, allegedly for trying to fly under a bridge. From the museums website :- During World War One the Army wanted to develop a non-flying trainer which would give student pilots the feel of airplane controls at near-flying speeds, without the danger of actual flight. The only aircraft of this type produced was by the Breese Aircraft Corporation of Farmingdale. In 1917 Breese received a contract for 300 trainers called "Penguins". The Penguin's wings were too short and its engine too small to allow it to fly. This original is the sole surviving example.
