Two days before the end of WWI, a lost German pilot landed this Fokker D.VII behind allied lines near Verdun. Sent to the USA as a war prize, it was eventually added to the Smithsonian's collection. The aircraft was restored in 1970 in the original markings of pilot Heinz von Beaulieu-Marconnay who landed it over fifty years earlier.

Germany produced around 3,300 D.VII aircraft in the second half of 1918. This rush for quantity lead to many production defects, however, the D.VII proved to be a remarkably successful design and quickly proved itself to be a formidable aircraft. The Armistice ending the war specifically required, in the fourth clause of the "Clauses Relating to the Western Front", that Germany surrender all D.VIIs to the Allies. The type saw widespread use with many countries after WWI.

Cool picture of D-20 and D-30 of the Blue Band Escadrille, a display flight. This name, with the English words, was likely unofficial, Blue Band being a margarine brand. On November 9th 1918, two days before the Armistice of WWI this aircraft, piloted by Heinz von Beaulieu-Marconnay landed at an Allied airfield near Verdun in France. The aircraft was subsequently shipped to the USA where it was restored in the early 1970s. The code U-10 relates to the Regiment with which the pilot had served prior to joining the Air Force, The Tenth Uhlans. The aircraft is seen here displayed in the Smithsonian collection.

This D.VII was flown by the Dutch Marineluchtvaartdienst (MLD) until 1935. The fuselage fairing in front of the cockpit has been slightly modified so that distinguishes it from a WWI active service plane. The markings are fake but typical camouflage for German aircraft in WWI. It has been part of the Deutsches Museum collection since 1948 amd is now on display, unarmed, at the Flugwerft Schleissheim.
