Built in 1918 by Fokker. It was most likely confiscated by Allied forces at the manufacturing plant and next shipped to the United States for the U.S. Air Service. Later sold for civilian use, it was featured in several movies, including Hell's Angels (1930). The Museum purchased the aircraft in 1971, and a propeller and engine were donated in 1972 and 1975, respectively.

The Fokker D.VII is a German World War I fighter aircraft designed by Reinhold Platz of the Fokker-Flugzeugwerke. Germany produced around 3300 D.VII aircraft in the second half of 1918. In service with the Luftstreitkräfte, the D.VII quickly proved itself to be a formidable aircraft. Surviving aircraft saw much service with many countries in the years after World War I. This example was built by Albatros Flugzeugwerke (AFW) and can be found in Hall 2 of the excellent Musée de l'Air et de l'Espace in Le Bourget.

Two days before the end of WWI, a lost German pilot landed this Fokker D.VII behind allied lines near Verdun. Sent to the USA as a war prize, it was eventually added to the Smithsonian's collection. The aircraft was restored in 1970 in the original markings of pilot Heinz von Beaulieu-Marconnay who landed it over fifty years earlier.

Germany produced around 3,300 D.VII aircraft in the second half of 1918. This rush for quantity lead to many production defects, however, the D.VII proved to be a remarkably successful design and quickly proved itself to be a formidable aircraft. The Armistice ending the war specifically required, in the fourth clause of the "Clauses Relating to the Western Front", that Germany surrender all D.VIIs to the Allies. The type saw widespread use with many countries after WWI.
