PK-AFC arrives in Australia on an experimental air mail service from the Netherlands. PK-AFC flew the legs after Batavia. The success of the flight prompted Imperial Airways to start a joint UK-Australia service with Qantas although it took over three years to get going . Under pressure from the UK, KNILM was barred from operating regular services into Australia until 1938. The Dutch were unable to retaliate by barring the Imperial/Qantas from the Dutch East Indies because KLM needed to transit India and other British possessions. The Lerwick was a failure, unstable on the water and in the air. It was still pressed into service with No 209 Sqn in late 1940, but withdrawn from operational duties already in May 1941. Eleven out of 23 examples built were lost in accidents. L7265 is seen near RAF Wig Bay at Stranraer. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

C5001 was owned by Harry Butler, who painted it red and named it Red Devil. He used it for racing and also had an Avro 504K for joy flights. C5001 became G-AUCH in 1921. After Butler was badly injured in the crash of the Avro in 1922, the Bristol was cancelled and then stored following his death in 1923. C5001 returned to the register as VH-UQI in 1930 with a Gipsy engine in place of the Le Rhone rotary. Now preserved at Harry Butler Memorial, Minlaton, South Australia, in its 1919 markings and a Le Rhone engine fitted. Photo from: State Library of South Australia

VH-MMS seen here either on a promotion flight on December 28, 1959, or its inaugural flight three days later. It amassed over 70,000 hours in Australia before it was exported to Chile in 1991.
