The arsenal of democracy. Lockheed Hudsons and Douglas DB-7s for the Royal Air Force, and an L-18 Lodestar, ZS-ATE, for South African Airways. Originally ordered by France, the 100 DB-7A Havoc IIs, including AH443 and AH436 here with the white serials, were converted to night fighters. Judging by photo 408544, this shot was taken at Floyd Bennett Field in New York, probably in December 1940. Photo from: National Museum of Denmark

The French carrier Béarn launching a Levasseur PL.101 reconnaissance aircraft. The construction and serial number on the rudder is 34 or 54; we think either is possible for a PL.101. The PL.101 replaced the original PL.10 model in 1935. Photo from: National Museum of Denmark

Another interesting puzzle. The Ju 52 production list quickly revealed the aircraft name, but also that Lufthansa had four Iron Annies named Olaf Bielenstein between 1935 and 1945. The source says this is a 'German naval station', implying a wartime shot. However, a look under the wing rules out D-AVAJ, D-AIAG and D-ASHB, so this must be D-APOR, which served on the DLH route to Oslo in 1936. To Syndicato Condor as PP-CBF in 1938. To Argentine air force in 1946 as T-155. To Argentine ministry of Agriculture in 1951 as LV-ZBH and even returned to service as late as 1956. Photo from: National Museum of Denmark

At the time of its involvement in the Congo Crisis, the Swedish air force had little transport capacity, but its first C-130E was hired for evaluation in 1965 and soon bought. It was this machine, US serial 64-0546, becoming 84001 and seen here civilian-registered during the Biafran Airlift at Santa Isabel (now Malabo). 84001 was retired in 2014. 'Air France announce that the Latécoère 631 will go into service on the route to the West Indies for which three have been ordered. On July 25th an initial flight started from Bordeaux... 631-04 was flown over last week from Biscarrosse to the BOAC base at Hythe, and was made available for flying experience and examination.' The visit reassured the Brits about the future of the Saro Princess but of course, the days of the flying boat were numbered. The six-engined Laté 631 had first flown in 1942 with German consent. Ten examples were built. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

This Handley Page O/400 heavy bomber, ex J2252, was fitted with ten passenger seats without windows in 1919 and flown to Norway via Holland and Denmark. It drew large crowds and over 100 people made a flight during demonstrations at Kjeller army airfield. Note the irregular lettering and the roundel shining through the civilian paint.
