129314 underwent trials as a drone helicopter - see other photo - and we assume the black box attached to the starboard rotor pylon is associated with these. Here, however, it is portraying the American dream of the family helicopter. 129314 reported struck off charge at Kaman in January 1961. Photo by: Robert Kelley / Life

The H-43A was the first USAF version of Kaman's K-600, still powered by an R-1340 Wasp piston engine as you can see. It was already a base rescue helicopter just like the later, turbine-engined H-43s. Preceded by 58-5524, this airframe, 58-1823, was the first production H-43A, first flying on 19 September 1958. With Navy HUK-1 BuNo 146317 hovering behind, this photo must have been taken around that time. Photo by: Robert Kelley / Life

Support aircraft for the 5th Bombardment Group, the "Bomber Barons". At the time of the photo the group was based in the Philippines but the photo caption says it was taken in Borneo. The Allies had landed in Borneo in May 1945 and several airfields were in their hands by July 1945 when this photo was taken. They are in present day Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. 42-23418 was scrapped when the war ended. Photo from: National Archives at College Park, Maryland

41-7746 was sold in Italy as I-PALU after the war. The back of the photo says it was taken in Italy, with Casablanca pencilled in. The presence of French aircraft discounts Italy. Both C-47s shown were based at Oran Tafaraoui, which was also a base for A-20s, P-39s and P-38s as seen in the background. A photo of P-40s at Casablanca at this time showed arched hangar roofs, not pitched as in the photo and the proximity of the mountains fits Oran better than Casablanca. However this is not a certainty and open to correction. Photo from: National Archives at College Park, Maryland
