Very rare shot of Instone Air Line's newly acquired DC-6 being pushed back into the hangar for refurbishment, just after its ferry flight and still in its Yemen Airways colours with crudely scrubbed titles and logos still clearly visible. Delivered to Maritime Central in 1958, she first arrived in the UK later that year being registered G-APSA with Cunard Eagle. Saudi Arabian bought her in 1964 and donated to Yemen in 1971, where she became 4W-ABQ. Another DC-6 still survived (just) in a very derelict state at Sana'a.

Rare shot of the last seconds of the last flight by this particular Beverley, arriving on delivery to the Historic Aircraft Museum. Previously used by A&AEE for ULLA heavy drop trials. Sadly rusted away after museum failed and scrapped 4.89. Cockpit now at Newark. ATC quote from early Bev flight in French airspace: "We have contact, you appear to be followed by two objects" - "That's ok, it's our fins"

"Hello there!" Airside safety standards were not quite what they are now in those days. The A&AEE Valetta taxies in as crew ferry for Beverley XB261 which had just arrived for the Historic Aircraft Museum. Del. 3.5.61, s.o.c. 10.4.72 to Gatow fire dump and survived into the late 70s. I recall being in a school biology lesson when this noisily arrived in the Southend circuit on 13.6.67 - we all ran to the windows and forgot about reproduction or whatever. A total of 661 "Flygande Tunnan" ("Flying Barrels") were built from 1950 to 1956, the largest production run for any SAAB aircraft. An English test pilot described it as "on the ground an ugly duckling - in the air, a swift". Eventually displayed in the HAM which closed in 1982, 29640 landed up in the MAM at Coventry

One of two Sea Furys awaiting restoration at Southend with Lincoln RF342/G-APRJ as backdrop, WJ288 was first delivered to the RN in 1951 and went on to a long Warbird flying career, first as G-SALY then N15FS, now based at Midland, TX. The other Southend Sea Fury, WJ244, became G-FURY but was written off in 1981

Here in ex-RAAF c/s, this Viscount later became well-known as G-BFZL with BMA, Manx and BAF but was first N40N with Union Carbide from 5.60 then A6-435 with the RAAF from 8.64. She found her way to the Sultan of Oman's AF via Southend 1971 - see my next shot after repaint. Behind are Ecko Anson G-AGPG and Bob Batt's Prentice G-AOKH

Gambia Air Shuttle operated 'NA as "Viscount Banjul" in this simple but effective colour scheme for 10 months during 1989. The basic white paintwork survives to this day as the Viscount is preserved as an attraction at Zomergem in Belgium
