The Hoopoe was a private venture naval fighter that first flew in 1927 and went through many changes before it was sent for service trials in 1932. By then progress had overtaken it and the Hawker Nimrod became the FAA's preference. The photo shows the Hoopoe in its 1929 configuration with an Armstrong-Siddeley Jaguar engine in place of the original Bristol Mercury and single-bay wings in place of two-bay wings. The Jaguar engine was later replaced with an Armstrong Siddeley Panther. N237 was scrapped in 1932. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

The Vickers 141 was created by reengining the Vickers 123 with a Rolls Royce Kestrel in place of the Hispano-Suiza engine of the 123. Unsuccessful in winning an RAF order, it was modified, as seen here, for shipboard use with deck trials in June 1929. It was unsuccessful again. Throughout both trials it remained registered G-EBNQ. The design was developed into the Bristol Jupiter-powered Vickers 143 of which six were built for Bolivia. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

Keith Virtue obtained his pilot's license age 19 and here a year later he has gone into business with his brother to operate this Moth as Virtue's Air Travel. The Moth then flew with Australian National Airways from November 1936 to June 1940. It was later impressed as A7-105 and wrecked in a mid-air collision with A7-110 at Essendon/Vic on 1 October 1940. The Parks P-1 was a licensed copy of the Kreider-Reisner Challenger, which itself became the Fairchild KR-34. The P-1 retained the original WWI vintage OX-5 engine and 45 P-1s were built at Cahokia, across the Mississippi from Saint Louis. Oliver Parks founded Parks Air College here in 1927. Photo dated 'circa 1929'. NC353K was registered between 1929 and 1936. Photo from: Saint Louis University

Siskin fighters lined up at Hendon. First row, J8950, J8664, J8662, J8056, J8666, J8668, J8670 of No 29 Sqn. In second row is J8836 of No 43 Sqn. On No 29 Sqn's previous equipment, the Gloster Grebe, the squadron marking was four crosses. On the Siskin this was shortened to three. Thus the origin of this marking is not a mispaint of a Roman numeral XXIX. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

New York City's flying police squad was 'for patrolling the water front' but also 'to curb low flying over the metropolitan area' and 'to prevent airplanes from flying over congested areas'! Their brand new K-84 Commuter amphibian is seen at the old Loening factory at 31st Street at East River, Manhattan, closed later in 1929 following the merger with Keystone. Some of the New Yorkers in the staff, including Leroy Grumman, did not feel like moving to Bristol, Pennsylvania and started their own business on Long Island.

Both C-GANZ and Fairchild CF-AET were operated by Canadian Airways, with Sept-ÃŽles a stop on services out of its Montreal base. G-GANZ was originally built by Curtiss as a HS-2L for the US navy and then rebuilt by Canadian Vickers as a HS-3L. It was cancelled from the register in 1930. This photo has been catalogued as Winnipeg 1929. G-CYZI looks to be parked in a crop. The lack of a prop and the missing panels suggest it force landed there. ZI was used for cropdusting and insect spraying trials, at one stage on floats. After one forced water landing fishermen salvaged it and sold it back to the RCAF for $25. Reported scrapped in 1932 Photo from: Ken Molson fonds - Ingenium

Caption on the photo says Angeles Mesa Drive airfield. According to several sources this was the original name of Burbank airport before it became United Airport in 1930. Others claim it was Rogers airfield which closed in 1931. The background in the photo is too open to be Rogers, which was very compact. NC753E's fate is unknown. An unlucky aircraft. Made is first flight in NZ in January 1929 at a time when it did not need to be registered. Damaged when it hit a cow. After repairs a friend of the owner decided to singe off loose threads in the fabric and set the plane alight. New wings and fuselage acquired and in January 1930 the Monocoupe was registered ZK-ABD. Three months later it suffered a fatal crash. Another rebuild followed. In 1938 a broken crankshaft saw it grounded and stored. It remained stored until destroyed in a October 1953 hangar fire.
