Slide taken in outdoor aircraft display area at the original USAF Museum site. The X-3 was transferred to the museum in 1956, and is now on display inside the current museum. The X-3 never reached its potential due to underpowered engines, but it did contribute data on high speed stability issues. The X-3 wing design was used on both the Lockheed F-104 and the North American X-15.

Built as C-74 USAAF 42-65406. In 1949 it was converted to the YC-124 prototype. Flown to the original USAF Museum in 1957 and put on display in the outside aircraft area. It was deemed too large to move to the current museum site and was donated to the base fire department and expended (scrapped) circa early 1970s. This a/c was not reserialed 48-795 after its conversion. 48-795 was the first new build C-124A constructed.

Built as USAAF C-53 41-20095. Owned and operated by the State of Ohio Department of Commerce from 1964 through 1977, then donated to the USAF Museum, where it remained until 1992. Seen here still with the State of Ohio flag on the tail. The aircraft later went to Vintage Wings of Washington, PA. for a complete restoration back to a C-53 configuration.

Originally designated YF-96A, it featured the fuselage of the last production F-84E fitted with sweptback wing and horizontal tail. Note the round intake of the f-84E as opposed to the ovular intake of production F-84Fs. The change was required to accommodate the increased airflow needs of the more powerful J65 engine which replaced the J35 of the F-84E and YF-96A.Iit's last use was in the development of the FICON parasite fighter for the B-36 with the addition of a nose hook and negative dihedral on the horizontal tail surfaces.
