Leased by Pan Am in 1947, this L-749 made the 'first commercial flight around the world' - New York to San Francisco via Europe and Asia. It completed the circumnavigation as a ferry flight because Pan Am was not allowed to fly domestic services. PAA could carry passengers between foreign cities on the route, however, and it was in the timetable as PA flight 1 and 2 for many years. Built in 1958 and at this date it still had the short tail and lacked a ventral fin. To Turkish Airlines as TC-JBB in 1974 then went on to the Panama register (convenience of choice back then) from 1977 through to 1984, when it was scrapped at Taipei (RCTP) as N4594A.

Delivered new 21st Dec 1984 and to Sempati as PK-JIC 19th May 1993

Delivery of N1027V to Pan Am on 2 March 1949 was at Portland, Oregon for tax avoidance reasons. On 13 March, she made a press flight from San Franciso to the Grand Canyon. She then went on public display in Los Angeles, San Diego, and Salt Lake City as seen here, before going into regular service. She was also named Clipper Rainbow and Clipper Friendship. First flew in 1969. Delivered to Pan Am in 1970. Fitted with side cargo door in 1988. To Aeroposta in 1992. Stored at San Bernadino in 1994. Shipped to South Korea in 1999 and used as a restaurant in Seoul. Scrapped in 2010.

"Clipper America"

N529PA was sold to United as N150UA in 1986.

Initially used for testing, "Clipper America" was delivered to PAA on 12 June 1949, and soon renamed "Clipper Bald Eagle". This airline publicity shot shows a typical crew of eight in front of passengers and freight. Chevron's fuel tankers also get in on the act. The aircraft served the airline until sale in 1960. From PAA 60 years ago.

"Clipper America" was the second Sratocruiser for PAWA, first flying on 17 April 1948. Seen on a photo sortie, it was delivered on 19 March 1949. Damaged beyond repair in a wheels up landing at Manila on 2 June 1958. Obtained from PAWA 60 years ago.
