Acquired by American Airlines from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation on 7 December 1945 and modified as a flying test bed for airborne radar research. The print has a Kaiser-Fleetwings rubber stamp dated 'SEP 20 1946' on the back. That plus the inclusion of the company's Chief Engineer (R.W. Ayer) in the photo indicates their involvement in providing the strange-looking cupola. On 8 August 1947 the aircraft was wrecked when it stalled into the East River during a single engine missed approach at LaGuardia/NY. Photo from: William Engle via Tim Martin

In 1952 it was rebuilt as an R4D-8 (C-117D from 1962) "Super DC-3" with a the new c/n 43378, and retired to the MASDC "Boneyard" at Tucson in 1976. It was registered N886M to the Lee County Health Dept. in 1978 and exported to the Dominican Republic as HI-477, later HI-477CA, in 1986. In April 1989 it was seized by US Customs at Isla Grande Airport, San Juan, PR., and was damaged there by Hurricane Hugo in September that year; its derelict remains were last reported there in 2003.

Ex USAAF 42-93007. On D-Day 6th June 1944 whilst serving with the 86th Troop Carrier Squadron, 437th Troop Carrier Group USAAF, this aircraft towed a glider from RAF Ramsbury carrying men and equipment to a landing zone near Sainte-Mère-Église, Normandy. It was retired to the MASDC "boneyard" at Tucson in April 1964, and bought by Embry Riddle University in Miami, FL., as N72420. In 1973 it was acquired by the Lee County Mosquito Control District as a spares source to support the operation of their DC-3 fleet, and lapsed into dereliction at their Buckingham Field base.

It's ironic that that this aircraft was painted to depict a military C-47, wearing the faux serial "0795405", displayed outside the 305th Bomb Group Restaurant at Sarasota-Bradenton Airport, FL., as it had no military history being delivered to United Air Lines in 1937 and serving with them until 1954. It was later displayed outside the Air Transport Command Restaurant at New Castle County Airport, DE., but lapsed into dereliction there following its closure and was later donated to the Massey Air Museum at Massey Aerodrome, MD., where it has now been restored to static display condition.

The wingtip of 42-23589, along with both engines and other parts, form a memorial to the 20 US and Australian servicemen killed when the aircraft broke up in a storm on November 16, 1943. The monument was dedicated in 2004 at a site that could be accessed by the public about 6km from where the wreckage fell that night. Photo by: David Caughey

A genuine DC-3 cockpit section mounted on the facade of the Servientrega office at El Dorado Airport. About half way between the Marriott Hotel and the Puente Aerea Terminal. It is still unknown from which airframe this cockpit section is. There have been many propliners broken up here over the years at both Bogota El Dorado Airport as well as at nearby Madrid Airbase.

Donated to the museum. This aircraft had flown with Qantas from 1948 to 1960, initially as VH-EAP and later as VH-EBY. Sold to TAA as VH-SBG and later P2-SBG and P2-ANP with Air Niugini. Became N5590A in 1980 before returning to Australian ownership in 1982 as VH-BPL. Made its last flight in January 1993 to Hoxton Park near Sydney. Plans to operate the aircraft ended when the owner passed away. Condition of the aircraft deteriorated. By the time it was donated it was could not be made airworthy and had to be trucked to Longreach. Photo by: David Caughey
