Former Portuguese Air Force aircraft (ex 6309, fin from 6310). Had registration OO-AGU reserved for it in 1987, but this was not taken up. Many other identities are quoted for this aircraft (c/n 501196, 5670 and 5671), but during restoration for the Musée Royal de l'Armée a plate was found on this aircraft which gave its identity as Werknummer 5667.

Built by Colin Winton and his son Scott, the Grasshopper was designed to fit under Air Navigation Order 95.10, which limited the empty weight of such aircraft to less than 100kg. Power came from a 432cc Robin engine. The Grasshopper was developed in the late 1970s well before a system of aircraft registration for such aircraft was formally established. The museum's aircraft was based in Western Australia where it made several long distance flights but by 1981 had been grounded. It passed to the QAM in 2008.

The ESG-29 is a single-seat primary training glider from 1929 that flew in many countries. Large numbers have been built, also by gliding clubs. It had the nickname "Schädelspalter" (skullsplitter) because of the strut in front of the pilot, but no such occurrences have been reported! The one seen here is an airworthy replica built by Klaus Heyn and handed over to the Deutsches Segelflugmuseum at Wasserkuppe in 1988.

The unregistered protototype Baby shortly before its first flight on 30 April 1919 from Hamble, when it spun in on the nearby foreshore because the pilot cut the ignition switches inadvertently. Parts used in construction of a second example K-131, later G-EACQ and G-AUCQ. The latter is the sole survivor of the type, exhibited in a Brisbane museum. From Avro 60 years ago.

At the Aviation Museum at YMMB. Designed by Ronald Gilbert Wheeler in 1974-75, probably the most basic 3-axis flying machine in the world, the "forefather" of all Australian ultralights, it was the first commercially available aircraft in its class. Equipped with an 8 hp lawnmower engine, it utilised rudder and elevator for yaw and pitch, and wing warping for roll. The Australian Government regulations of 1976 restricted flight operations of such aircraft to no higher than 300 feet AGL

The unregistered and unapproved Merlin training glider built for the Gliding Club of Victoria by a team led by Norm Hyde. Tail from a Slingsby Kadet but rest original. Flew April 1943 as a tandem 2-seater with parasol wing. Crashed Benalla during a winch launch at club's 1948/49 summer camp. It had done 2600 flights for the club. Wreckage sold to RAAF Forest Hill and rebuilt by cadets. New fuselage but wing and tail from original. Crashed. Sold to Canberra Gliding Club and rebuilt as seen in photo. Crashed Cootamundra on December 27, 1959 when wing detached after casting off from an aero tow.

Investigators examine the wreckage of the Merlin glider of the Canberra Gliding Club, which crashed on 27 December 1959 when its wing detached soon after casting off from an aero tow. Pilot killed. The wing strut to fuselage attachments were inadequate, as the result of a rebuilt after an earlier accident. The unregistered glider first flew in 1943 and had made several thousand flights before the fatal final rebuild. Gliding was unregulated in 1943 with no registration or type approvals required. When gliding became regulated in the 1950s, existing gliders did not have to comply.

Flown in 1914, the Ca 20 was armed with a machine gun placed above the pilot and the propeller disc, and it does look like a harbinger of the fighter aircraft. Only this prototype was built, however. The Ca 20 was largely forgotten, although it was shown at an exposition in Rome in 1936.

After having visited the aviation exposition ILA Frankfurt in 1909, a group of 14 to 16 year old grammar school pupils became so enthusiastic that they founded the Flug-Sport-Vereinigung Darmstadt on 25-Aug-1909. They started to build several types of gliders and test flying them. On 22-Jul-1912 Hans Gutermuth flew their FSV-10 a distance of 840m in 1 min 50 sec at the Wasserkuppe, which at that time was a new glider world record. The photo shows the replica built by the Deutsches Segelflugmuseum.
