When the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland was dissolved in 1963, there were significant changes also in the airlines of the region. Central African Airways had been the federation's airline. Coming out of that airline, Zambia Airways, Air Malawi, and Air Rhodesia were established in the following years. CAA remained as a holding company and operated the aircraft on behalf of the three airlines. The actual operator was shown below the tail with interchangeable signs. Photographer unknown

When the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland was dissolved and Malawi and Zambia gained independence, CAA became a holding company and the Viscounts operated with nameplates for the new airlines; Air Malawi, Air Rhodesia, and Zambia Airways. To Air Malawi as 7Q-YKO 1 January 1968, 1 January 1968 to Air Rhodesia as VP-YKB, to Air Zimbabwe Rhodesia June 1979, name changed to Air Zimbabwe February 1980. Re-registered Z-YNB October 1983. This aircraft had a few operators before being painted up for Baltic Airlines in Feb 1988, to be registered SE-KBU but the airline never got off the ground and was leased to British Midland in full Baltic livery till Aug 1988, then to LAR and finally Virgin (it did get a Virgin tail for a while). The aircraft was retired at EGMC (Southend) 1st Aug 1989 and scrapped in June 1997

Some early Viscount 700 aircraft have a large scoop under the belly like this one. I used to know what it was for. Does anybody else?

Built in 1958 for Lanica Airlines as AN-AKQ then sold as above in February 1959 to private owner Mrs. Marjorie M Post. Scrapped at Tucson (KTUS) in August 1993 as XA-MOS. The aircraft name must have seemed like a bad joke considering the conditions here!

slide from the NK collection. - The Turkish Air Force took over all three remaining Viscounts from THY in 1971/72. This example here started as TC-SEC in 1958, and was withdrawn from military service in 1981. It was probably broken up at Etimesgut after many years of storage.
