Photo believed to date from about 1929 when G-AUAE was reregistered VH-UAE. At the time it was operated by the Australian Aero Club. The timber building at the right is the original aero club and was replaced by a more substantial building on a different site in 1930. The old club building was then removed and the area became apron. The hangar is Government Hangar No.1, which stood out as it had the airport name, Mascot, painted in the roof. VH-UAE remains registered in 2019. Photo from: Hood Collection/State Library of New South Wales

Camooweal, population 200, has an airport in 2019 but back when VH-UJM visited it likely landed at the racecourse and taxied up the main street to the pub. G-AABY was a contestant in the 1934 Mildenhall-Melbourne air race but so many misfortunes befell it it was listed as a "failed to finish". It did arrive a month after the race was ended and found a buyer in Queensland. The photo is believed to show it in Queensland, likely at Archerfield, ahead of being registered VH-UTT to a Toowoomba owner. Soon after it was sold in Papua New Guinea but by August 1937 it was no longer in use. Photo from: State Library of Queensland

PK-AFB was part of the KNILM fleet until it crashed on February 4, 1938. Sistership PK-AFC visited Australia during the many years Dutch authorities sought approval to add Australia to the KLM/KNILM route map. When approval was finally received, KNILM was using Lockheed 14s and there is no record of -AFB ever visiting Australia. The Ryan factory was opposite Consolidated's at then Lindbergh Field. The Ryan YO-51 was designed to meet a 1938 USAAC requirement for an observation aircraft and clearly influenced by the Fieseler Storch. The competition was won by the Stinson Vigilant and only three YO-51s were built, this being the first one, 40-703, according to the San Diego Air & Space Museum. VH-EAA arrives at Sydney at the end of its delivery flight. Converted to an L-749A in 1952 and sold to BOAC in February 1955. QEA had been lined up to take Avro Tudor IIs alongside BOAC and South African Airways. The Avro's poor hot and high performance saw QEA (with relief) switch to the superior Constellation. Brisbane Flying School was established by Qantas in 1927. VH-UIC arrived on the register as G-AUIC in January 1929 but by the end of the year it had adopted the VH- prefix. It arrived in Brisbane in 1938 after a string of NSW-based owners. Crashed in 1939 and shipped south to Sydney for repairs. Soon after returning to the air, -UIC was impressed by the RAAF as A7-115. Became an instructional airframe. Photo from: State Library of Queensland
