When Western New Guinea (Netherlands New Guinea) still was a Dutch colony, my uncle served there as a conscript marine. In 1957 he took this picture of an abandoned Japanese aircraft in the Indonesian forests. Considering the inline engine this is probably a Yokosuka D4Y. Photo by: Joop van der Heide

Formerly known as GIL-4 and built in the 50's as a 4-seat light helicopter. Due to a long program of testing and issues, the first flight didn't take place until February 10, 1959. It completed 17 flights for a total flight time of 3h40. The Zuk was still in development when the project was cancelled in favor of the license production of the Mil Mi-1. The prototype was damged during landing on August 31, 1959 and that was the end of the aircraft. 2 other prototypes were not completed.

Based on the SSW D.IV, but with larger wings (+ reinforcements), changing of the empennage outline and the use of a high altitude propellor. It never flew though, as during ground testing the wing construction appeared too delicate for a safe flight. This frame is the only example that's left on the planet, after being partly restored in the late 90's.

This is at the store and restoration site for the museum. From the museum website: built in 1927, the Museum's FB-5 came to us as a donation, consisting of a few miscellaneous parts, an engine shell and a cooling radiator. The remainder of the aircraft components have been created by our volunteers in the restoration and machine shops at Gillespie Field and Balboa Park. When completed in 2020, this very rare fighter will take its place as one of the dozen or so built from scratch (virtually) aircraft in the collection.
