Written off at East Midlands Airport in February 1969 after a landing gear collapse

This aircraft was stored at the Midland Air Museum for many years before being re-assembled. It had acquired titling since I had photographed it some three years earlier. It had previously been a fire trainer at Scone in Scotland.

Photographer not known. This is an undated Kodachrome slide taken at London Airport circa late 1950s/early 1960s. The two nearest BEA Viscounts are G-AOYJ (left) and G-AOHM (on the right), both of which went on to fly until the 1990s, latterly with British Air Ferries. EI-AKK was damaged beyond repair in a non-fatal landing accident at Bristol-Lulsgate on 21 September 1967.

Photographer not known. Alidair made only limited use of this machine and never put it onto the UK register. Its livery remained essentially unchanged from its days with Tenneco in the USA. Note also that it is fitted with additional external "slipper" fuel tanks. It was disposed of to Far Eastern Air Transport in 1976. Sadly, it crashed in Indonesia on 26 August 1980 while on lease to Bouraq Airlines, with the loss of 31 lives. The accident was attributed to separation of the right elevator and consequent loss of control.

One of the earliest Viscounts completed by Vickers, delivered to British European Airways in 1953. Sold to Cambrian Airways in 1963. Leased to BOAC in 1972 to provide feeder flights from Edinburgh and Belfast for BOAC's Prestwick transatlantic services. Donated to the RAF Museum at Cosford in 1976. Transferred in 2006 to the National Museum of Flight, East Fortune, where it remains stored in a dismantled state.

Photographer unknown. An undated image of this Aer Lingus Viscount preparing to depart from Shannon. I estimate it to have been taken circa 1960-1. Note the group of press photographers at bottom left, presumably focusing on a notable passenger of the time. Construction of the taxiway from the apron to the recently-built runway 24 is still underway.

Leased from British Air Ferries between June 1986 and September 1987. Note the Guernsey Post Office titles on the rear fuselage. This Viscount was previously BEA's G-AOYJ, sold to BAF in 1981 and reregistered in 1984.

slide scan from the NK collection. - Once a common visitor to Munich-Riem when in service with Condor, the oldest Viscount on the German register visited Bavaria again, this time being operated by a Swedish charter airline. - The airframe was last used by Hotair as G-BAPF and was retired in 1990. As a rescue trainer at Moreton-On-March it survived until 2017.

Photos of VH-TVC in Ansett-ANA markings are hard to find. Ansett-ANA received three of TAA's Viscount 720s in a lease exchange for two of its DC-6Bs. The exchange was forced on TAA by the government in an attempt to equalise the two fleets. TVC broke up over Sydney's Botany Bay on November 30, 1961 after flying into a storm soon after take-off.

I really like the civil exhibits in their correct historical looks. D-ANAF was delivered to Lufthansa in 1961 looking like this, the titles were updated around 1967. By january 1969 just 7 years after delivery it was taken out of service. It then became an instructional airframe for Lufthansa Technicians. First in Nora c/s then in several different Lufthansa c/s. I remember just being able to see it from the viewing area at Frankfurt in the early 90s. In 2012 it moved to the Museum at Speyer. Now it flies in close formation with the Lufthansa B747-200. They are the outdoor center piece here.

"Engine changeover in TAA hangar" according to our index card, but it looks like more than that.
