Air Malta began operations April 1, 1974 in partnership with Pakistan International Airlines and two wet leased Boeing 720Bs. As the airline gained autonomy, it purchased three more 720s (adding to the original two). In 1981, Air Malta wet leased three Boeing 737s from Transavia Holland. With these aircraft working out very well, the airline bought three of their own from Boeing. This 737 was the second one, delivered March 31, 1983.

Originally delivered May 11, 1976 to Garuda Indonesia as PK-GVU christened Kamundan, this F-28 was sold back to Fokker in June 1984. Re-delivered to Piedmont Airlines the following December as N298N, it was registered N451US when the airline merged with US Air in 1989. Time Air registered the aircraft C-FJRI in 1991, merging into Canadian Partner in 1993 when Canadian Airlines consolidated their regional partners.
