Had been repainted since my photo taken in 1989. Built for the USAAF as C-47A 42-23624 then transferred to the US Navy as 12429 in 1943. Converted to an R4D-5Z in 1947. Registered as N7632C in 1958. Re-designated as a VC-47H in 1962. To the FAA as N58 in 1966. Reregistered as N78 in 1973. To Northern Peninsular Fisheries as N78125 in 1976. Withdrawn from use at Arlington, WA by 1987. Fuselage noted at El Mirage, CA from 1997 to 2000.

Taxiing out for Gillam's gravel runway, this Dakota started as a lend lease aircraft for the Royal Air Force. Built as 44-76481 and delivered as KN392, it was struck off strenght by the RAF in 1950 and transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force. It was re-serialed 12917 in 1970 only to be sold and overhauled in 1971. Northward Aviation and Gander Aviation operated CF-BKX before Lambair added it to their fleet. (1976 - 1980). While with Ontario Central Airlines, the aircraft was written off after an engine failed on take-off and it descended into trees at Shamathawa, MB on February 15, 1983.

VH-ANX after it was transferred from Ansett-ANA to MMA. It would eventually be repainted in the Ansett "delta" livery adopted by all airlines in the Ansett group. ANX saw little service, with its role mainly transporting spare engines. MMA did not have current DC-3 pilots and they would be brought in from Melbourne as needed.

East-West was based at Tamworth. It would be acquired by long-time protagonist Ansett and ceased to exist in 1993.

Arkia's DC-3/C-47's helped keeping Israel's southernmost city - Eilat - connected to the rest of the country in the late 1950's / early 1960's. However, the airframe shown here never carried the registration 4X-AES, which did exist though but had c/n 11923 (USAAF FY 42-92154 > RAF FL562 > HB-ATO > NC74136 > OO-AFB > to Israel DF) and then to Arkia between April 2, 1957 and June 26, 1966. "4X-AES" has since been moved a few miles north to the new Eilat Airport LLER.
