Two F-84Cs of 58 FS, 33 FIG from Otis AFB, on delivery to the Kansas ANG in Wichita, ran out of fuel near Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. Pilot Donald Lynch in 47-1526 tried to land on a straight stretch of Route 218 near Spraggs. He departed the road to avoid a car, clipped off six telephone poles and came to a stop against a sycamore tree. John Ostler in 47-1524 came down in farmer Carl Hoy's field. Both aircraft were destroyed but there were no serious injuries. Photo by: Paul Slantis / Historic Pittsburgh

The photo shows one of the few B-32 Dominators thrown into combat. The aircraft flew its first combat mission with the 386th Bomb Squadron on 13 June 1945. On 28 August it flew a photo recce mission over Tokyo to check if the terms of the Japanese surrender were being observed, including the removal of propellers from Japanese aircraft. Suffering two malfunctioning engines the crew bailed out on the way back to Okinawa. Two men perished and 42-108528 was possibly the last American aircraft lost on an operational mission in World War II. Photo by: Harold Corsini / Historic Pittsburgh

This swept-wing prototype was a converted F-84E, yet its designation was YF-96A. This was soon changed to YF-84F to sell the project as low-risk, even though the eventual Thunderstreak had little in common with the Thunderjet. The photo is thought to have been taken after rollout at Farmingdale with a posing pilot - the jet was apparently taken to Edwards for its first flight on 6 June 1950. Demonstrated in Europe in 1934-1935, this Staggerwing was sold to Abyssinia (Ethiopia). A French pilot delivered it to Akaki airfield on 20 October 1935. Emperor Haile Selassie came to inspect it two days later. It was painted creamy white and blue and named Nisiri (eagle) in Amharic script. The Red Cross objected to the red Coptic cross marking seen on the wing and it was removed. Meanwhile Italy was invading the country and the subsequent use and fate of the Beech are uncertain. Thanks to Zelealem Andarge for pointing out that Akaki was the same airfield as Lideta. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)
